Is
Mr. Borden to Retire?
The latest political rurnor from Ot-
tawa is that Mr. Borden is -to *op Out
of the leadership of the Cortoervative
party. It. has been known for some
time that was not harmony In the
ranks, and Liberal papers have several
times hinted that the trouble would
shortly come to a head, with the re-
sult that Mr. Borden would retire. These
rumors, however; have been as frequent-
ly denied by the Conservative --Niers
The Toronto World, one of the junior
'Conservative organs, however, makes no
bones that there is much bickering In
the ranks and in a despatch from its
Ottawa, correspondent on Tuesday
gives an insight into the party doings
at Ottawa. It says:
"Hon. Robert L. Borden, the lead -
of the Opposition, will hand
Ida resignation to the Conservative
party to -morrow. It is understood
that his determination to resign is nix-
ed; but the party generaaiy, who are
with few e.xceptions all behind him, re
hopeful that they will be able •fto In-
duce him to retain the leadership.
A petitIA was circulated this even-
ing amonget the Conservative ,rnetri-
bers asking him to continue as leader
of the party, and was signed by all
the members who are in town except
ix. -1
The situation 13 so crucial tha.t the
editors of some of the Conservative
organs are in the city and have had
ccrnferences with him. It is under-
stood that they, as well as the leading
Conservativee in the. House, have point-
ed out to hith that his resignation at
this moment may mean the disintegra-
