JANUARY 17, 1890. :HE HURO EXPOS 'Thoughts for the New Year. Renewed feelings of ambition are syn. -onymous with, the opening of a new year. More resolutions are made than at any other time, and as often are they alas! broken. But with some the reso- lutions made with the dawn of new year have been carried through to its -close. Numerous lives of honor and ac- hievement can be traced to some deter- mination of purpose made upon an occa- oiou such as the first day of a year af- fords for a fresh start in the journey of life. We all' desire success; the pro- b]em of life is its winning. Every per - eon carries in his or her own hand the key that unlocks either the door of suc- cess or failure. The true key of success is labor, and it requires a strong, reso- lute will to, turn it. It is hard, earnest work, step by step, that ensures success, and never was this truth more potent than at the present time. Positions of trust and eminence are no longer secur- ed it a single leap. Men .and women have ceased t succeed in a hurry. Oc- casionally there will be an exception, but the instances are rare. Success, a writer has said, is the child of confi- dence and perseverance, and never was the meaning of a word more clearly de - flan& The secret of many successful careers is the thorough performance of whatever has been undertaken. An ex- cellent maxim is that which counsels us never to put our hands to anything into which we cannot throw our whole ener- gies harnessed with the very best of our endeavors. Perseverence is essential to success, since it is often achieved only through a long succession of fail- ures. In spite of our best efforts, fail- ures are in store for the majority of the race. It remains, then, for us all to do the best we can under all circumstances, bearing in mind that races are not al- ways won by the swiftest feet, nor tri- umphs in battle secured by the strong- est arms. It is not sh much the possess- ion of swiftness or strength as it is the right application of them by which sue- cessis ensured. In starting out upon the journey of life, it is well: First, to obtain every kernel of know- ledge within your reach. Study people for the knowledge they can impart to you. Read books for what they can teach you. Next, see what your temperament best auits you for. Mark your tendencies, and apply them. Be sure that you have not mistaken your calling. Once certain, apply yourself to your chosen work. Then, work hard, earnest and inces- sant. Don't consider anything beneath you. Be patient, honest and. pleasant in manner. Treat all persons alike, high or low: Have a smile for all; a pleasant word , for everybody. Success may not come at first, but it will not be far off, and when it does come it will be the sweeter for its delay. open all around. And if there are cracks and holes in the foundation the cold air will find its way into the building. If the foundation is high and of loose stones, as they are under many old barna and sheds, a good wind break may be made by setting stakes a foot from the wall and filling the space with straw, potato crops or small ever green trees that may be out in the pasture. No man should be happy with his news- paper and his apples around the fire, while the stock are suffering on account of his neglect. —Mirror Farmer. Minard'aLiniment for sale everywhere. Minard's Liniment relieves Neuralgia. IIMINIMEMIN1191.1111MMIIIM About ,Reading Newspapers. I see that Bishop Foss' in his address to the class seeking admission to Con- ference, advised the young ministers to give scanty attention to the daily news- papers. But I must certainly disagree with this episcopal dictum, for I think the wise reading of the daily newspapers is a symmetrical education. While things slip in sometimes which ought to be passed by, the Editors of a great news- paper have the Midas touch and know the gold of promise from the brass of profession. There is no noble senti- ment, no true strain of poetry, no sonor- ous work fit to roll, round the world, no gem of thought but finds its way at last into the columns of the daily press. The newspaper is a fresh photograph of human life—oh, has it not depth of meaning for the noblest sermon? I read often the 'advertisements of the paper, and find in them the wit,, power and also the pathos of life. I thank the daily press for the living sermons it has given me. As on autumn's day the wind shades the trees and the leaves fall down and make an amethyst* and -golden floor, so this great tree'the shaken press, every day, shakes down its white leaves upon the world—leaves of knowledge; leaves of healing. When I see a. young minister yip() wisely reads- the daily paper I am Entre he is growing in grace, at least an that spot where it is thought the average minister is sadly deficient—Pittsburg Despatch. Why Not An Infidel? I once met a thoughtful scholar who told 'me he had read every book he could which assaulted the religion of Jesus Christ, and he said he should have become an infidel but for threethings : "First, I am a man, I am going some- where. To -night I am a day nearer the grave than I was last night. I have read all such books can tell me. They shed not one solitary ray of hope or light upon the darkness. They shall not take away the guide and leave me stone blind. Second, I had a mother. I saw her go down into the dark valley where I am going, and she leaned on an unseen arm as calmly as a child goes to sleep on its mother!! breast. I know, that was not a dream. Third, I have three motherless daughters. They have no protection but myself. I would rather kill them than leave them in this sinful world, if you blot out from it all the teachings of the gospel."—Bishop W hippie. Water Which Is On Fire. . If, during a dark night, one watches attentively the advance and the retreat of the breakers on a beach, he will gen- erally preceive the crest of each billow to be illuminated by a faint flash on the moment of its fall. After the wave sub- sides, the beach will •bspangled with brilliant fiery specks, hich shine ,for a few moments, and then disappear. These lights" -will convey an idea of what is meant by the phosphorescence of the° ocean. At all times, and in nearly all situ- ations, the spray thrown up by the bow of the vessel is thickly strewed dur- ing the night with little silvery stars, that dance and whirl about among the eddies, until they are lost in the dis- tance. These luminous particles are generally so small that they are caught with difficulty, and so perfectly trans- parent, that they can scarcely be die tinguished from the drops of brine ad- hering to the net. Their own fiery radiance, by which they are visible to their native element, is soon lost when brought into the air. Such appearances -are very frequently noticed in most parts of the North At- lantic Ocean, excepting the Gulf Stream. The fretful waves of this region, vexed as it is=py PerPattlat squalls, appear to be wrapped in total darkness. TOR.' I That Lantern. Every farmer has or ought to have, a good lantern. A has, farmer has the interest of his stock as much in mind in the night as in the day. It is often necessary to go to the barn at midnight. Horses get sick, sometimes, though given the best of treatment, and what man wants to 'stop to clean and fill a lantern when he hears the agonizing groans of, a valuable animal? Or, if a tap at the door discloses the presence of a messenger telling of a sick neighbor . who wishes your aid, do you want to wait while the lantern globes are being polished, when your presence may be of vital importance? A dirty lanterti al- ways brings to my mind that text about the foolish virgins, and that other text, with a slight alteration : "Be ye also ready, for the hoar when ye think not, ye may be called hastily," and have to. wait for your lantern to be cleaned and filled. Sometimes, it is true, whole months may elapse and the lantern not be re- quired. If there is no probability of its being needed, see that it is in perfect order and slip a paper bag over it; fas- ten the bag at the top with a little rub-' ber band. It will take but a second to remove the bag. By all means have a regular place for the lantern, and see that it is always in its place when not in use. The lantern burner can be scoured with bath brick and rubbed with cham- ois. The light will be much improved if the burner is bright. The oil should be emptied out and the bowl washed with hot soapsuds' occasionally, for all kerosene has some dregs. — ELZA RENAN. " There was a frog who lived in a spring, Be caught such a cold he could not sing." Poor. unfortunate Batrachian I In what a sad plight he must have been. And yet his misfortune was one that often befalls singers. Many a once tuneful voice among those who belong to the "genus homo " is utterly al:killed by "cold in the head," or on the lungs, or both combined. For the above mentioned" croaker" we are not aware that any remedy was ever devised; but we rejoice to know that all human singers may keep their heads clear and throats in tune by the -timely use of Dr. Sage's Ca- tarrh Remedy and Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery.. • Dr. Sage's Catarrh Remedy cures the worst cases of Catarrh in the Head, no matter of how long standings while for all laryngeal, bronchial. throat and lung affec- tions, Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discov- ery is positively Unequaled. It was Elder Russell, who called on a worthy deacon to open a meeting with prayer, and. was surprised when the good man began his petition with : "Oh, thou great, insignificant God," "Omnipotent, brother; you mean omnipotent God," whispered the horri- fied -pastor. " Huh 1" ejaculated the surprised supplicant, "what's that you say ?" The preacher repeated the correction, whereupon the deacon cOntinned the prayer to a great length, and colecluded asfollows : - "Finally, Lord bless our eaclicated parsbn.
