saying in the course of his sermon, that
he proposed to have Sunday observed in
front of his church if not in any other

The laborers refused, and after
jeering at him a few minutes began pelt-

through the heart of one, arrested the

the affair became greatly excited, and
demanded the arrest of the sentry for
murder. The military authorities, how-
ever, promptly issued an order eulogiz-
ing the conduct of the sentry, and pro.

Acounty seat of Harper
eeeetfry, Kansas, was crowded Saturday
with people to celebrate the Fourth of
July. Judge Culver, speaker of the day,
was just commencing when Judge Black-
burn, president of the meeting, and
many of the people were seized with se-
vere griping pains in the region of the
stomach, and soon it became known that
they had been poisoned by lemonade
made from tartar emetic. The celebra-
tion was abandoned, wagons and car-
riages were turned into ambulances, and
search parties were sent into barns, out-
ROXETER MI houses, and along the roads to gather in
and care for the sufferers. In the hospi-
- GIBSON, tal, which had been improvised, 60 per-
sons at one time lay writhing with pain.
Prepriefort The local physicians and such as could
be called did everything in their power
to allay the pain. The lives of many
were despaired ef for a time, but all
subsequently recovered except one wo-

—Mr. George Barthel, Sr., oneeof the
pioneers of the Huron trade/passed
away somewhat suddenly on Monday,
21st tilts at the ripe old age of 75 years
and 6 months. Deceased was born in
Alsace, near Strasbourg, in 1810, and
came to this country from his native
place in 1832, settling on the 1st conces-
sion of Ellice toWnship, where he hewed
out for himself a comfortable home.
This he sold some years ago and remov-
ed to Kastnerville, where he followed
the trade of stone mason. His aged
partner still survives and he leaves a
number of children and -grandchildren.
Mr. Barthel was a devout member of
the Baptist church; upright and honor-
able in ail his dealings; generous to a
fault, always cheerful; he passed
through Iife without making an enemy,
and all who knew hire were his friends.

At a reception to the Rev. Dr. Seward.
in New Britain, Conn., recently, rem-
' ininences were in order. It was said
that Dr.Seward insisted, when appoint-
ed pastor, in 1836, that he should not
be called upon for more than two public
services each Sunday: that one member
of the church reently prayed that the
pastor would receive grace to preach in
the morning and afternoon, and; " if his
strength held out, he might continue in
the evening." Dr. Seward told of re-
ceiving a bushel of turnips for marrying
a couple, and. some years later the bride-
oora appeared and passed. out a $10

out so vv -ell that be felt justified in the
expenditure." A man once came into

boots, to walk the whole length of a side
gallery, when an exchange minister

his eyes, and, pointing a long finger at

where you are." He then resumed his
prayer.

* Failing Health.
Ten years ago my health began to fail.
I was troubled with a distressing Cough,
Night Sweats, Weakness, and Nervous-

by different physicians, but became so
weak that I could not go up stairs with-

strong as ever. — Mrs. E. L. Williams,

taken faithfully, that it will thoroughly
eradicate this terrible disease. I have also
