Mr. Newman., formerly missio ary at Castle Garden, induced them t go to North Carolina by holding out false prospect of plenty of work an good wages. The complainants std e that they have suffered great- hardships. Newman denies the charges. He was some time ago expelled from ( Castle Garden for selling tickets to immigrants on commission. —About six weeks ago an embryo potato merchant purchased a car load of potatoes from Mr. E. A. Cairncross, of Shakespeare, to be delivered at the station, paying down on the bargain 030. The potatoes were delivered next day and a oar ordered by the merchant, but meantime potatoes fell in price and the merchant refused to accept, and they now lie in the freight house a mass of corruption. The company have given orders to clear them out ,at the merchant's expense, and a prety law suit for the value of the potat es and expenses will soon be in progres . —A few weeks ago a son of Mit•. Chas. Prindle, of Newbury, aged eight years, was taken ill, but with proper medical treatment and care he recovered suffi- ciently to be up most cf the time during the day. One evening recently he started to undress himself fqr bed. While so doing he struck hist elbow against the bedpost, which caused a numbness. In a short time is arm began to swell, causing the aronts considerable anxiety. A physician was called in, who gave the child some- thing to scatter the pain. This seemed only to increase the difficulty, f )r now, instead of suffering in the arm alone, he was suffering all over. Son the bones began to soften, and in a f w days he died. Cute Old Horses. The intelligence of old troop horses is the subject of many anecdotes, which, wonderful_ as they often are, will rarely be doubted by any one who is f miliar with horses. A good story illu trative of their sagacity is told and vouched for as authentic by the Diamond News. The scene of the oectirrence was Potchefstroom, where our men and the Boers were known to be very near neighbors ; so near, indeed, that when the horses were turned out to water they had their headstalls and halters taken off, so that if the enemy sudden- ly appeared and tried to catch the ani- mals they would have nothing to lay hold of them by, and the horses would have a chance of escaping into their own lines. One evening, as usual, the horses were let outof the fort to water, and rushed straight to the vale where they usually drank. But the Boers were wearer than had been suspected, and jumping out of some trenches, succeed- ed in capturing the animals, in spite of the fact that the halters were missing. The Boers, being admirable riders, as is well known, mounted, and would prob- ably have been able to guide their new steeds into the towfi, when suddenly the bugle at the fort sounded "horses in at a trot," and straightway the whole of them turned and made for home., car- rying their unwilling freight. The Dutchmen threw themselves off right and left, but four of them were carried right into camp and taken prisoners.— 1 London Standard. The Parrot and • the Pointer.. A gentleman living near Port Jervis has a parrot who knows a good deal 1 more than the law allows. Last sem- j mer a friend his - whose name we withhold for obvious reasons, called at 1 his house one day. A valuable young 1 dog, pointer, was with him. The two 1 gentlemen eat on the porch smoking, and the parrot, which is very tame, was seated in an interstice in the trellis about the porch. The: dog was lying on the floor at his master's feet, and finally his attention was called to the bird, which was looking steadily at him. The dog sprang up, drew on the parrot and fastened. There he stood, still as a statue, for full three minutes, when the parrot, with a contemptuous flirt of his feathers, screamed at him, "Go home, you cussed fool !" The dog dropped tail and ears, wheeled round and struck a bee line over the fields for home. Since that time he has refused to point a bird.—Port Jervis Union. Epps's Cocoa. Grateful and comforting.—"By thorough knowledge of the natural laws which govern the operations of diges- tion and nutrition, and by a careful ap- plication of the fine properties of well selected cocoa, Mr. Epps has provided uur breakfast tables with a delicately flavored beverage, which may save us many heavy doctors' bills. It is by the judicious use of such articles of diet that a constitution may be gradually built up until strong enough to resist every tendency to disease. Hundreds of sub- tle maladies are floating around us ready to attack wherever there is a weak point. We may escape many a fatal shaft by keeping ourselves well fortified with pure blood and a properly nourished frame."—Civil Ser- vice iSazette.
