SHEEP RAISING. IN TEXA.S.
Mr. Hugh Johnston, an old and
known resident of Goderioh, who -has
been spending the winter with his son
in Texas, in a letter to the Gabriela
Star gives the follOwing interesting
sketch of sheep raising in that State.
The sheep business is one ofthe leading
industries of Bosque llounty, Texae, and
Mr. Johnston's son being largely en-
gaged in sheep farming, he seems to
havenaade himself thoroughly .conver:
sant with the general features of the
business. The following extract, will,
we fancy, be read with interest. 'He
says: I now propose to say something
about the leai -f sheep ' adapted

ar as my experience
has led me to love. The merinos

not suit them ; their place is the rich,
moist plain, and they are therefore not
so well adapted to our habitual ex-
tremes as the hardyrnerino. Suited as
these are to scanty, dried up or poor
hill side pasturage, no English mutton
breeds can compare with thern. It will
not require any formal array id facts
from me 'to show that the profits _pf
sheep husbandry on the prairies must
succeed, and that the profits of sheep
production far exceed those of horses,
cattle or swine. He who embarks ex-
tensively in sheep husbandry in the
older States or Canada, must buy a
large amount of comparatively high-
priced land, clear up, fence, sow, pas-
ture, build for shelter, &c., before he is
ready to purchase a flock of sheep to
make a beginning. All this requires
an outlay of much capital, whereas the
prairie sheep farmer. can 1 commence
operations without buying anythingbut
his sheep, or if he does not chose to be
a pure nomad, he can buy acres for less
than the annual interest of acres of the
ordinary grazing lands of the old States
or Canada,. His principal capital is a
decent knowledge of his business, and
enough energy to persevere in it. Thus
have started a large majority of the
pioneer sheep ,farmers of this -'State.
Northern men are generally told not to
commence_ sheep husba,ndry on the
prairies until they have allthe con-
venient appliances. Of course the
sooner he can surround himeelf with
them the better, but he acts wisely in
not waiting for the -m. The object' of
the sheep man is to get on the edges of
the creeks in - the valleys, where he
builds his house, sheds for his sheep,
fences for his grain and root fields, and
pastures of rye, oats Or barley, 'for early
spring feed for his ewes and lambs.
When he obtains the bank 4 of the
creeks and the clumps of woo land, he
in effeet has the permanent c ntrol of
the hills and pasturage for in ny miles
in extent. There are immenetracts of
ing the "blaze" of the surve
specting for minerals in the.
mountains of New Mexico.

served flock masters for a few years,
until they earn sufficient in .enough
sheep to commence a flock of their own.
They follow their sheep by day over the
prairies, herding them in little tempor-
ary inclosures at night, to protect them
from wolves and, dogs. 'Wolves 1 have
not seen in my travels as yet: In the
fall they erect a temporary larrange-

merinos were found to be the @Jeep re-

ducer. A sheep can be raised as
cheaply in Texas as a goose ora turkey
in Canada ; the climate ie so genial
that .sheep hardly need a shepherd, and
multiply with unexampled rapidity.
As I. have already said, a ,small capit0
is sufficient for going into the wool
business, and this fact makes it mitre
attractive than the cattle business to
men of moderate Means. Mexican
ewes can be bought for 50 cents each in
Mexico, and driven across the ,country ;
but the drive is so far from here, that
those who own the ranches' and have a
fixed place of abode ttre content to put
up with a dearer lot of ewes. One
thousand ewes and merino bucks On-

you want to own your own land yon
can purchase it for a dollar an acre.
Shearing costs five cents a head, and as
it is the custom to shear twice a year,
instead of once, as in Canada; we have
an extra, crop of wOol. The yield of
wool -will average about six pounds
incidentally to
each, and when the breed is improved

from the returns, the business is a re-
markably good one as far as remunera-
tion is concerned. The fact is„ there is
no business so easy to manage, or that
pays so- large a profit, as the raising of
cattle or sheep, and bo countrY where it scalded.
