I do believe you think nobody will be saved but you and your minister." Old lady—"Aweel, my dear, all whiles I hae my doobts aboot the meeniater 1" y "No, Samuel" calmly replied Mrs. Bartlett, in answer to his furioup and. sarcastic questions, "no, it isn't bsicause there's no gray cloth in Burlington that 1 patched your summer trousers with seal -brown basket cloth, but I'm going to break off your loaferish habit ofgoing in your shirt sleeves during business hours or Pll make you the laughing stock of the town," —A large and enthusiastic meeting was held' in Listowel last Sattirday evening to discusa. the terms o the Syndicate bargain with the Govern- ment. The Mayor, J. W. Scott, sq., occupied the chair. The ,meeting was ✓ addressed by D. D. Hay, Esq.. Mr. e Jamey Fisher, Stratford ; and kir. -G-. R. Pattullo, of WoodstoPle, who spoke in opposition to the Government policy. Mr. C. Smith, a barrister from trat- ford, defended the bargain, after w 'eh resolutions were put and. carried con- demning the policy of the Govern ent. —Not long since, in one of our n igh- boring villages, a young lady who had been engaged to a fine young man for some time met a richer person and soon put off the old love for the new. She wrote to the old. lover reqoesting him to return her photograph. Here was a chalice for revenge, which he took by sending her the following n te : "I would gladly comply with your re- quest, but if I do. so it will spoil my euchre deck. I ha-ve a collection of photographs which I use for playing cards, and I do not wish to break it by giving away the deuce of diamonds.'1 —At the anti -syndicate meeting held at Guelph the other night, Mr. A. W. Wright, who -usually sides with • the Conservatives, said the bargain remind- ed him of the story of the white man and the Indian who had a turkey and a crow as a result of their day's hunting. The white man proposed to divide the game in either of two ways: he woald take the turkey and the Indian the crow, or the Indiau might take .the crow and he would take the turkey. The Indian protested that it was his crow all the time. So he. said 1he syndicate proposed to deal with 1he country. —The Amherstburg Echo ea s : " Several of our subscribers have ado t- ea the plan of taking regalarly tem copies of the Echo, one of whioh is filed for binding. This is a very good idla, as the Echo, when saved and bound, makes a very convenient and reliable history of the County of Essex, and. a history which will increase in interest as, the years go by, while the cost is bat a mere trifle, and that spread over !a long period of time." The Echo is :a well conducted paper, and we heartily commend the good B01188 of those who take the extra copy for binding. It will be an interesting and valuable addition to their library. —A man formerly of considerable note in the journalistic and litera y world, whose renown has since bee clouded by the notoriety of a gre scandal, was at a crowded- evenli party in New York .some years ag standinebin an upstairs corridor. 10 hint a lady in a magnificent dress and. sparkling with jewels came with great eagerness. Though she was unknown to him, he naturally supposed she had. recognized him by the light of his genius shining on his Hyperion brow, or knew him by repdtation. He wa therefore prepared to receive her wit smiles. "Are you the waiter ?" she d maaided. "No !" retorted he, wit looks of thunder, "are you the chambe maid ?" and he darted down stairs. g —Not even a lawyer, however skiff in cross-examitiation, can make a wit- ness tell the truth, provided the witnest wishes to evade it. I is impossible t put a question in suoi exact languag as will demand the desired answer It was necessary, on a certain occasion in court, to compel a witness to testify as to the way in which a Mr. Smith treated his horse. • 'Well, sir,"*said the lawyer, with a sweet and winning smile—a smile intended to drown all suspicion as to ulterior purposes—"how does Mr. Smith generally ride a horse?" The witness looked up innocently an replied, "Generally a- traddle, sir, I be lieve." The lawyer as ed again : "But sir, what gait does he *de ?" The irn perturbable witness answered : never rides any gate a all, sir, but I'V seen his boys ride eve y gate on thei farm." The lawyer b&w he was on thei track of a Tartar, and his next question was very insinuating. "How does Mr. Smith ride when he is in company with others ?" I demand a clear answer." • "Well, sir," said the witness, "he keeps up with the rest, if his horse is able to, or if not he falls behind." The lawyer was by this time almost beside himself, and asked : "And. heat does he ride when he is alone?" "t don't koow," was the reply; "I was never with him when he was alone," and there the case dropped. —The Gingham Times of last week has the following: Between twelve and oue o'clock in the plight of Monday, the 20th ult., an unusu' 1 concourse of some six or seven men iith their horses took place in the yar. Of John A. McEwen, Esq., J. 13, 4f the township of Morris, who arising frozn his shun. bers to ascertain the cause of the strange occurrence, WO informed by the spokestnan, Mr. Rule, who lives about three miles from, the village of Molesworth, that they came to consult him upon a case of abduction which occurred. at two o'clock the same day, The Magistrate being thus co-njured, felt it his duty to dress and learn fur - they partionlars. So having duly ad- mitted his unbidden guests, he ascer- tained the following particulars: David Cox married KT% Rule's daughter, who died about ten years ago- in giving birth to an infant daughter. This child was reared and educated so far; by its grand parents who regard the little girl as one of their, own children, and were about to take her away with the rest of the family to Manitoba, to which country they are about shortly to emigrate. Cox having mourned the decease of his first Wife for a, decent period, took to his bosom a second help- meet who has presented him with a • secoud progeny of olive branches, to whom the father has, at frequent inter- vals, wished to add his child by the first - wife. Every overture having this object for its aim had been scornfully rejected by the grand parents of the little girl.
