Sunlight.
The sun, if you wi1L only open your
house to him, is 'a faithful physician,
wli i will be pretty constant in attend-
ance, and a ho will send in no bills.,
Many years ago glass was something of
a luxury, but now we can all have
good sized windows, a tdplenty Of them,
at moderate cost, and there is no ex-
cuse for making mere loopholes,threugh
Which the sun can cast but half an eye,
and from which one can gain only nar-
row 'glimpses of the beautiful outer
world.
1 airs sufficiently acquainted with the'e
Conservative character of many coun-
try people to know that expressions of
disdain will come from some quarters
wheel I mention bay windows. Never-
theless bay windows are a good thing.
Their effect is very much like .letting
heaven into one's house, at least it
ought to be like that, for it is nothing
but absurdity and wiokednees to darken
such windows with shutters or heavy
curtains until only a struggling ray of
sunlight can be seen: -
If hay windows are too expensive, a
very good substitute can . be' had by
• placing two ordinary sized windows
side by aide with a wide capacious
ledge at the bottom for seats or for
plants.
A. rrom with a window Iike this can-
not fail to be cheery, and its effect in a
simple cottage house is quite sumptuous.
There is likewise in its favor the fact
that it is less exposed . than the deep
bay window to outer heat and cold. •
In a kitchen or in a child's bedroom,
or in an attic where the walls are low,
two hall windows set side by 'side and
made to slide or to open on hinges, ad-
mit a broad, generous light, and give
an apartment a pretty and pleasing
rustic Lir.
Let the builder endeavor to have all
rooms in daily use, especially bedrooms
and sitting rooms, well lighted by the
sun. "To sleep in nnsunned • beds in
unsunried chambers, and to work day
after dty in nnsunned rooms, is the
unrepented. sin of half'. the nation,"
vigorously afffil•ms a prominent writer.
But this should not be said of that part
of the nation living in the country, far
from those towering brick walls whose
steps take hold on basement kitchens,
roadie whose depressing shadows many
lives must necessarily be spent. In the
oountry, with a whole sky to draw from,
let theca be light ! If any rooms iu the
house net look solely to the north for
illumin tion, let them be the parlor and
the spa e chamber. People who come
and go an be cheerful for a while in a
north- endowed apartment, but the
-constar t dwellers in a house need its
sunniest rooms.—Farm .Homes.
An (Qbstropolous 'Conductor
Discharged.
Robert Criswell, the man whose wit
gave the Oil City Derrick its fanny
reputatipn, and who is now on thle'Cin-
cinnati Enquirer, played a heartless
joke on a car conductor of the Paris of
America, for rudeness. Criswell was
going home on the horse car in ques-
tion, anc1 it was crowded inside, se he
loafed on the rear platform. The Con-
ductor t Id .him to go inside. Gristvell
told him he didn't care to go inside,; but
the co, ductor insisted, and loudly
threaten d to put him off. Everybody
began to look at the dispute, but Cris-
well saws nobody that knew him and
determined to have his little joke. The
conductgr yelled, "Come, young fellow,
get insi e, or I'll bounce you clear
across the street I" Criswell turned to.
him and said iu a severe manner, "My
man, yo don't know who I am, but
I've had my eyes on you for several
days. here are too many conductors
like you n the road, and we are toeing
friends eery day because our patrons
are ensu ted by .condaotors who are
boors an ruffians. Nov you can pull
the bell nerd and let me off. But 'you
need not take out the car to -morrow ;
there will be a man to take your place.
When you take the car in to -night turn
over your bell -punch and ask for your
time. That will settle it." Taking a
mental note of the number of the -car,
he waited. for it next day, and there was
a new conductor. The newspaper man
asked, "Where is the conductor who
was on yesterday ?" "Oh," the new Man
said, . "t e blamed old fool tried to
bounce a director last night, and he got
fired,"
.A.nimals at the Pole.
A correspondent writes : Polar bears
- are found distributed over nearly the
entire ocean. They are generally on
the ice or in the vicinity, although in
stances are recorded of their being
found at sea fifty miles from any land
or Ice. They grow to an enormous
size. Of six killed by us during the
cruise the smallest would weigh at least
900 pounds, and the largest some 2,000
pounds. They swim rapidly when pur-
sued, and seek to escape by diving, but
can rerm iu under the surface only a
few seconds. . When wounded they al -
Most invariably turn and show fight.
The other mammals are generally dis-
tributed throughout the country. Rein-
deer are said to be most numerous in
that section lying between Point Belch-
er and Point Barrow, although they
often change their Habitation at times,
migrating in great numbers to regions
hundreds of miles distant. Moose do
not come drawn to the coast, but are
numerous in the interior., The ibex is
found back in the hills, and is said to
be plentiful, but, o wing to the difficulty
in getting at thorn, few of them are kill-
ed, and their skins are seldom seen
among the natives. Muskrats and
squirrels are very numerous all over the
coast. The - natives offered large quan-
tities > of these skins for sale, They are
seldom made up in wearing :apparel, the
skins of reindeer and seal being. the
favorite material. At Point Barrow we
saw a small animal resembling the lem-
