-,u ai_ • • • • • Ij Household Fri n tee A plain hemstitched pocket hand- kerchief Dan be ornamented prettily by putting a, row of feather stitching in white or colored working cotton just above the help This is a good way to mark handkerohlefs for the wash, pro- viding, of course,. that the washing is done at home. —Before the children's stookings be- ' + to be thin at the knees and to need arning, put a piece of cloth under and sew with fine stitches so that they will not -show ; soft flannel or pieces of old stockings which are strong enough to be worth using are better than any heavier cloth. By taking the trouble to do this, stockings may be made to last twice as .long as without it. —Almost everybody would like Gra- ham bread if it were properly made, and the ohildren ought to have it at least twice a week. The way to make it is to take some of the white bread Sponge, add a cap of molasses, and enough sponge• for one-half, a little warm water, and stir, not knead, the Graham flour into it, make the dough only a little stiffer than that for corn- meal bread, let it rise and bake it in a stow oven.. Another way, which has the advantage of being made quicker than the other, is to take two cups of Graham flour and one cup of white flour, one cup of sour milk, one cup of molasses,, one teaspoonful of saleratus ; stir it thoroughly and put into a well - buttered tin and steam two hours, then dry off in the oven. Any one who does notlike this must be not easily pleased. —Here is a recipe for a good plain cake. If eaten -when fresh it is really nice, and cannot be distinguished from a more expensive cake. It helps also to make that variery for which the troubled housewife is always seeking `.Take half a cup of butter, one cusp of sugar, half a 'cup of sweet milk, two eggs, two cups of . flour, two teaspoon - fah of baking powder, or one teaspoon- ful of soda; and one and a half of cream tartan., beat the eggs till very light, the whites and yokes together ; put in about two teaspoonfuls of caraway seed: A cake which is nice as a foundation for all kinds of layer cake, and which is also good for a loaf cake, is made of four 'caps of flour, two cups of sugar, one cup of sweet mirk, one cup of but- ter, four eggs—whites and yolks beaten separately—four teaspoonfuls of bak- ing powder ; flavor with lemon or va- nilla. The wise saying that "change is rest" is of value to the housekeeper. A deep truth underlies that assertion which we will do well to think of. It is certainly one reason why housework when moderately indulged in is health- ful and invigorating,. It is true in re- gard. to needlework also, and for this reason when your head is clear and you feel particularly like exerting yourself, it is an excellent thing to out .out a quantity of work of different kinds. The old opinion that one piece of work should. be completed before another is begun is not a good or philosophical one. How often after sewing steadily on one garment it has seemed to the excited brain as if each time the needle pierced. through the cloth it penetrated also to the very nerve. If, then, this work has been got out of sight and something else brought forth which is to be sure just as truly work as the other, but so unlike if that it requires different hand- ling, a feeling of relief is experienced and even of actual refreshment. Some- how different thoughts are awakened, and in the end more work is accom- plished with less fatigue and loss of energy than if the woman bad persisted in finishing one before beginning an- other. Another advantage to be gained from having more than one piece of work about is that if yon have a habit of harrying and worrying over every- thing you undertake, not giving your- self any peace till it is finished, you will learn to take things more easily. Goethe's famous motto "Without haste, but without rest," ought to describe the ' course taken by an earnest woman who feels the necessity of doing for her fam- ily all. that her strength will allow. It is a fault of the_ average woman that she likes too well to be admiringly com- pared to the swift -winged Mercury, without reflecting that Mercury was fully as swift to doevil as good, and so she too often hurries through life, driven far more by inward than outward forces., missing much of the beauty and sweet- ness that are gained only in quiet and repose. really made so, we should soon ee end of dawdling, rout'ne, trad'tion and listless farming, an 1 the n of a vigorous element sech as the world of business aad oarri and activity into every d spartmel There are of course many et v hick a farmer can:tram the .sou his unprosperous condi tion ; bu practice of keeping on hand, s and winter, a lot of practically 1 'ss cattle—for all cattle are air .at are not • profitable is th. and Danker that is surel substance. It is simply time how soon he will be acknow edged hope submissiolr. We repeat afford' to keep inferior man may a ` ord it, and debtedness lenge, but t ing to mak it, nor Inde kind of cat to himself trash and build up on poor stock consequeno an Poor Stock. Many a farmer -is kept poor by keep- ing too much stock. He would be prosperous if the stock was of the flight kind. It does not pay to keep cows through the winter that are dry pretty much all the time, It does not pay to keep over a lot of lean and fractious steers in the expectation that they will make good working cattle by waiting long enough. All such animals should be sold to those who have more food in store than their present poor owners. A miserable and melancholy lot of no - breed sheep constitutes no more desirr able property, either. Their fleeces are not worth waiting for,. and their mut- ton is called ; such only by courtesy. They are of no use to a farmer but to help keep him poor. Good stock, superior stock, pays for itself all the time. A herd. of cows is well worth wintering that . will pay in milk and butter many times more than the cost of their keep. No : other kind ought, therefore, to be allowed on a farm,. No business man ever expects to make headway against competition by holding a stock of goods that is of inferior value and out of fashion ; and a farmer ought to observe the same Tule, and carry on his hands no stock that is not of the very sort to give him a good footing in the produce market. He' never can get good milk, good butter, or! good Leef from poor runts of creatures whose existence comes under the head of a cideut rather than design. Su- perior stock is the only kind an enter-: prising and thrifty farmer can afford to keep. When cows show beyond a- question that they cannot give milk guough nor milk good enough to pay far their sup- port and yield a liberal profit beside, it is tiino they were disposed of on almost any terms that will clear them off the farm. It is the same with all creatures that are an incumbrance on the farm instead of a profit ; let them be put off without delay, and let the so-called sentiment in the case be eradicated by healthier considerations of what consti- tutes thrifty and profitable farming. This should be the touchstone every- where of good farming.
