—In one of the Rondout churches on
a recent Sunday the supply, a minister
from New York, after listerfing to the
fine singing of the anthem, is reported.
to have said r "Now that the choir
have had their little fun; we will mom-
!Hence the worship of God by singing
the 9ilth hymn."
— A country doctor, being ,out for a
day's shooting, took his errand boy to
carry the game bag. Entering a field
of turnips, the dog pointed, and the bay,.
everjoyed at the prospect of his master's
success, exclaimed, Lor, , master,
there's a covey ; if you get near 'em
won't you physic 'em ?" "Physic them,
you young rascal, what do you mean .?"
said the doctor. "Why, kill 'em, to be
sure," replied the lad.
—" Doctor," said a lisping fashion-
able bell, who had graduated at half a
.dozen boarding schools, to a friend of
ours, who had just been introduced to
her at an evening party, "doctor, which
do you prefer, tholidity of intellect or
brillianthy ? Thum admire tholidity ;
but as for me, as Shakethpeare •thayth
in 'Atli 'Bride of Abydoth,' 'I prefer
tholidity and brillianthy combined.' "
The doctor sank into the nearest chair
exhausted.
--Hahnemann, the founder .of. the
homceopathic school, was one day cons:
salted by a wealthy English lord. The
doctor.liatened patiently to the patient.
He took a small phial, opened it, and
held it under his lordship's nose.
"Smell! Well, you are cured." The lord
asked in surprise, " How much do I
owe you f" "A thousand- francs," was
the reply. The lord immediately pulled
out a bank note and held it under the
doctor's nose. "Smell I Well, you are
paid !"

A Witty Judge.
Readers of Shakespeare have always
enjoyed the wit of Portia, in the mer-
chant of Venice, by Which she saved
Antonia from the knife of Shylock, to
his pound of flesh, but added, should a
trop of blood be shed in taking it, -his
life would be forfeited. A California
judge has shown equal wit. A hard
character, wlell known as a thief, was
indicted for entering a miner's tent and
stealing a bag of gold dost. The theft
was -proved. He had been seed to cut a
slit in the tent and reach in and take
the bag. A bright thought , occurred to
the counsel for the clefeuse.'' _ . .
"How far did he get when he took the
dust?"
"About half way.in, as
over," said the witness.
"May it please your honor," said th
shrewd lawyer. " I shall demand ' th
acgnital of my client. The indictmen
is not sustained. He did not enter th.
ouse whe
d the othe
he reached
tent. Can a man eater a
one half of his body is in a
half out ?"
The jury and judge were
equal to the
emergency. The verdict of the ju
was : "Guilty as to one-half of hi:
body, and not guilty to the other half.''
The sentence of the judge was "Im
prisonm:ent for the guilty part, of tw
years. The prisoner may leave th
other part behind, or take it with him.
The sharp- lawyer was outwitted.

A Foolish Exploit.
An Arizona paper relates an explbit
by a Mexican, which, for downright
foolishness, put to flight any of the
daring performances of the heroes of
B'eadle's "yaller backs."It apps rs
that the Mexican, accompanied by is
dog, was lav his way to Tempe to do
some trading, when the dog treed a
large California lion. The man
unarmed, save with a large butch
knife, but nothing daunted, and kno
ing where he could sell the skin for ,
he whipped out his knife and started'
the tree after this specimen of the k
of beasts. Slipping up within reach
distance, he pluuged the knife into

so startled him that he leaped to
ground and was instantly bounced
the dog, when the than hastened fr

The lion measured about 8 feet from he
