An amateur gardener writ ng out his
experience in one of the En 'sli jour-

well -considered remarks, wh ther pro-

every orchardist 'will fully en ors. The
vegetable kingdom is one of the three
great natural divisions of 11 i ature

as important as that of the ani us al or

to market. Everywhere there was
business activity, and the thrift which
comes of businees habits. Some years h
ago when Mr. Z. ca e- into possession of
this farm, it fed 8 cows only, rd that
with difficulty; the stock k pt now
consists of 40 cows and 8 head of horses d
and mules, and last year 20 tons of hay
were sold off the farm. All this would
not be surprising if it were not rare. h
And why is it rare? The secret of it is
that this farm is worked like a business
to make it pay. The prodUctions are
milk and market crops. It maV be b-
jected. that these are_ profitabl; cro
But they are so only on a farm that is
well managed, and in this the e is no
difference between this branch of far -
ing and others. There is as el
petition in this business as
other, and within sight of this
rns.y see others whose owners
tinually grumbling at their unp
business, and are forced to
money to make ends meet at t
end. The secret of it is, th

head of the men; the work is ell doie
and is done early ; good cows nly
kept, and are well fed, and as oon
the milk falls off they are repl ced
fresh ones. Early crops are ringi
the highest prices ; laggard neig
bora get the lowest rates when the gl t
is on; and one early start fon:A s
through the season with fresh crops as
they come in. The owner and his 80u
and partner are good farmers and go d
managers, and here is the secret f
success. I know of other farmers li e
these men, but know a good nanbr
who are different in every way. 1 Mr.
told me he had used a large quantity of
salt and had found it of great benefit to
his land. It is very rarely that one
who uses salt fails to get value' for it.
Its effect upon grass is especially favor-
able. As a rl, I think that those who

use enough of it. Mr. Z. spreads 29
