ladtrial Uses of Bamboo-.
A late report of Dr. Schnell, Conser-
vator of Forests in Bengal, says that
there are about 1,800 square miles of
pu,bamboo forests in the Arrakan di-
-aision of British Burmah, within •a
moderate distance of ale streahe hsndAll
these bamboos have flowered several
accessible by
• years ago, and the ground is now cov-
ered with seedlings, which make the
forest impassable. The question as to
the practicability of using this pla'nt
for purposes of paper making has sev-
eral times been raised by Mr. Thomas
utledge, of England, and he has very
recently returned to the charge again in
& pamphlet entitled "Bamboo and its
Treatment," wherein he has brought
together information from botanists
and cultivators well worthy of serious
attention. From the Lumberman's
Gazette we learn that a company has
been formed in England, with a large
capital, for the extensive and various
utilization of this nteapzlse the
havingarts
of
its
industry, t he e
origin in the multitude of uses for
which the material is and for so long a
time past has been employed. iu India.
Besides being used in the latter coun-
try in the construction of the imple-
inents for weaving, bamboo is there
utilized for almost every conceivable
purpose for which wood is resorted to
in other countries. It forms the posts
and the frames of the roofs of huts ;
scaffolding for building houses ; raised
Boors for storing produce, in order to
preserve it from damp ; platforms for
merchandise in warehouses and, shops ;
stakes for nets in rivers ; bare, over
which nets are spread to.. dry ; the
masts, yards, oars, spars, and decks of
boats. It is used in the construction of
bridges across creeks ; for fences ; as a
levee for raising water for irrigation. It
is the material of which several agri-
cultural implements are made, as the
harrow, the handles of hoes, clod
breakers, etc.; hackeries or carts,
doodles of litters, and biers are all
made of it; and a common mode of
carrying light goods is to suspend them
from the end of a piece of • split bam-
boo laid across the shoulder. Further,
a joint of this material serves as a
holder of many articles, -as pens, small
instruments; and tools, and as a casein
which little articles are sent to a dis-
tance a joint of it also answers for
the purpose of a bottle, and is used for
holding milk, oil, and various fluids, a
section of it constituting the measure
for liquids, in bazaars. Apiece of it, of
small diameter, is used for a blowpipe
to kindle the fire, and by gold and sil-
ver smiths in melting metals. It also
supplies the place of a tube in distilling
apparatus. These, of course, comprise
but a portion of the uses to which this
valuable material is applicable, and it
opens up a wide field formanufacturing
industries.
A Debtor's Device.
_A gentleman of San Francisco, says
the Argonaut, has devoted a great part
of the time he has spent on the Pacific
coast in contracting bills, which he does
not find could be conveniently paid
when cue. Having lived in California
since ' 9, and being what is called " a
generous liver," he has numerous credi-
tors, and the sum of his debte is respect-
ably large. Some years ago he deter-
mined to attempt the gradual payment,
of all his liabilities. Endowed with a
silt every tendency to disease. Hun-
dreds of subtle maladies are floating
around us ready to attack wherever
there is a weak point. We may escape
many a fatal shaftby keeping ourselves
well fortified with pure blood, and a

nothing equalling it, although we have tested
about everything of the kind' made in this or the
Old Country. It is the strongest, cleanest, purest
and cheapest butter coloring we have eve: found,
and for all we can see, it is absolutely perfect. It
should entirely supersede carrots for coloring but-

GOLDS NI LION
r
fine sense of justice it puzzled him to: _ ,
decide upon a plan of liquidation that
would be fair and. equitable to all his
creditors. After a long consideration
he hit upon a method which he found
entirely satisfactory. He explained his
plans the other day to one of his re-
cently acquired creditors. A bill was
presented him with a request for im-
mediate payment. He took the ac-
count, and carefully checking all the
items, and footing up the long columns
of figures, found all correct. `hen he
quietly and neatly folded up the f bill and
filed it away in a pigeon -hole Imarked
" W." Turning to his waiting creditor,
he explained as follows : "liar.
liams, it will be some time yet before
your bill will come up in the regular
order, but you may depend upon thy
attention. Some years ago I adopted
an alphabetical system of paying off my
indebtedness, and I have now I got as
far as C. Don't trouble yourself to call
again. As soon as I get to W I will
call upon you with the amount." Struck
with the debtor's systematic and equit-
able method of doing business, the credi-
tor hopefully withdrew.
Scrubbing the Afghan.
An extraordinary joke has found its
way into the columns of the Court
Journal. The dirtiness of the' ifghan
is proverbial, and it is said that upon
one occasion General Roberts captured
a Moncul, -who was so preternaturally
dirty that it was thought necessary, for
the safety of the whole camp, .that he
should be washed. Two genuine Tom-
my Atkinses were told off for this pur-
pose. They stripped him, and scrub-
bed him with formidable brushes and a
large quantity of black soap for two
hours, at the end of which they threw
down their brushes in disgust and went,
to their Colonel. ""Whet is it, men ?"
"Well, sir, we've washed that Afghan
for two hours, but it wasn't no good.
After scrubbing him, sir, till our arms
were like to break, blest if we didn't
come on another suit of clothes."
