Ems a Firm was a sD iven into t o Bankruptcy bThree young men, Henry N. Phil- lips, William Hines, and Pearson Hen. &lesson, the cashier, book-keeper, and superintendent of the 'dry -goods estab- lishment -of Wilson & ' Greig, were re- cently arrested in New York for de-, riding the firm by which they :were employed out of a large sum of money. Tdetailed ed by following is the chief of policetoto ad New detailed by P York reporter "There is a wonderful difference, be- tween the way, in. which business is done in this .country and in Europe. The American merchant:,places entirely too much responsibility and trust inhis employees. It seems to be his desire: to or- ganize his business into a series of depart- ments, so that he can put each under the absolute control of some trusted person ltithen stow himself away in his private office and allow things to run themselves under the system. Look at it. Here was a large house, in. good standing, doing a good. trade. They put Hendrickson in charge- of the principal sales depart znent--•that of the cloaks. He had ,come well recommended, was smart and competent, and absolutely trusted. lbw was this department run ? When Hendrickson sold a cloak or a bill o cloaks he was paid. cash. It was hi• dnfyto send the cash at once with the bill of sale to Phillips, the cashier, b the hands of a cash boy. It was Phil .lips' business to receive the cash, see that it tallied with the bill of sale, put it in the safe, credit Hendrickson's de partment with it, and then turn ove+ the bill of sale to Hines, the book keeper. Hines' duty was to enter th sale in regular form in the books of h: firm. Hendrickson was master in hi• department, Phillips in his, and Hine • in his. So long as the men rem_aine. honest they acted as checks uponeac other, and upon any attempt at fraud Indeed, it would have been impossibl: for any one of them alone to have don .any stealing, and you must . remembe that the only protection the firm had was reliance upon the honesty of the men; and upon a probability that col- lusion between any two of them coul not take place.: Well, how did it work Hendrickson says to Philips, 4 Youare the cashier ; I sell the cloaks ; while we watch each other all is square. Burt if I sell $500 worth of goods, and in- stead of passing the money and bills o sale through a boy to you, avoid tha witness, and give them to you myself and you should destroy the bills of sal to an amount of $100, and pocket th amount for a whack -up between u why we make $50 apiece and no on the wispy. The, book-keeper can't fin it out, because he roust depend on yo for his items, - and of course. can't g what you don't give him. We ca make a fortune at this business in short time. Conte, let us go in.' We they go in, and systematically swindl the house. year in and year out. Ho can they be detected? In but one wa If the head of every department had a separate account with the firm, and was charged with every item of his stock, and credited withevery item of his sales, at the end of any given time the balance of his stock would tally - ex- actly with the books of the firm, and then fraud would be impossible. Th is the way such houses . as that of T. Stewart & Co. do business, and yo neverihear of that house being flqece by its employees. But ordivany hdi s de not keep such department account but trust everything to their depalticne men. And in cases like that of Wilso & Greig they can be, and I have1 o doubt -generally are, swindled out thousands of dollars every year, and a they ever know about it is that ' som -how or other ' their receipts don't tal with theoutgoes, and they say, '0 basiuw.s is bac.,' when the truth i their system alone is to blame. llpg as the cheating, is confined to co Ideion between the heads, of two d partmeuts, it is bad enough, but wh it :gets extended to three it. beton simply frightfiil, and, your see, aft Phillips had 1nade his af.-raugemei with Hendrickson, he tui nod arou - and matte another with Hines, ti -book-keeper. This arrangement co pelled Phillips to destroy a certa percentage of the C. 0.
