period before his death. He was an ex-
tensively rad and well informed- man,
and for al ngth of time a deacon in the
Presbyterin church, Clinton, and by his
death the hurch loses a valuable mem-
ber, his friends a good neighbor, and the
country a [highly respected citizen. He
leaves twosons and five daughters to
mourn his joas.
—A cowl belonging to Mr. John Fink-
biner, - 10th Concession, of - Stephen,
last week ave births, to a remarkable
monstrosit . The calf had two heads,
one perfect1y developed, the other rudi-
mentary situated on the abdomen. It
has seven f et and legs invarions positions
on the bod apparently with very little
view to reuiarity or natural position,
the other growing from the spine. One
of the feet Icontained. three large claws
instead of_ two. Cow and offspring are
dead. Th4 calf was exhumed after the
burial for the purpose of skinning and
atuffing it, but it was found to be too
much mutilated.

Grey townehip are emigrating to Mani-
toba this skring. Also a great number
from around Wingham are striking"for
the fair and fertile West.- A number of
farmers and others of the township of

There is this wee a slight decline in.
the price of wheat, and prices seem to
have a downward te dency. As a con-
sequence dealers ar exceedingly chary
about buying. It is not likely that prices
• will decline very i uch at present,- but
the high prices of he past few weeks
cannot be retained, s they were based
on speculation and ot on actual neces-
sity. A very large mount of grain was
delivered on this market during the past
week. We quote:

McCormic , of the eighth concession of
Elma, gave birth to two calves recently,
one conlin4 three weeks after the other.
A like phe omenon has not been heard
of before n this section. Both calves
and the co are doing well.
—The d te of the firsgcheese market at
Stratford 1as been fixed for Wednesday,
May 23rrangements have been made
with the rand Trunk and Port Dover
railways, so that members of the board
of trade pan obtain return tickets to
Stratford 01111 market days during the sea-
son at a fare and a third. .
—It is rnmored that Carronbrook and
Mitchell are to be erected. into &separate
parish by the Roman Catholic 1 authori-
ties, before the present year expires, the
priestin charge to live at Carronbrook.
This will be welcome news to the Cath-
olics of both places. Mitchell will then
have services every Sunday. '
—On Monday of last week,. & large
number of, people left Carronbrook on a
proapecting tour to the Muskoka free
grant settlements. Several parties from
that neighborhood, who have .returned
from there, give a very good account of
the place, , and have taken up land with
theintention of going back as soon as they
can. -I •
—The following prices for the accom-
modation of the public have been agreed
upon by the hotetkeepers. of Listowel:
Two horses to hay and oats, 50 cents;
cone horse to hay and oats, 25 cents; two
horses to hay, 20 cents.; one horse to
hay, 10 Cents ; single meals 25 cents ;
- board ,,per week, $3 50 to it. In the
future only one 'bus will be in use be-
tween the hotels and station)and. a
, fee of 10 cents will be charged for pas-
sengers. 1 '
—As seine boys in the village of
Shakespeare, on Wednesday night of
last wee4, were amusing 'themselves
throwing turpentine fireballs, a large
one in full blaze lodged in the eave trough
of the Shakespeare Hotel. Had it not
been for the shower that shortly before
wet the shingles, a serious fire might
have been the result,. AS it was

to reach the blazing meteor could be pro-
cured.
—The 4'eathis announced of Mr. Wm. -
McMartin, of the township of Nissouii,
at the advanced age of 84 years. De-
ceased. was emphatically a pioneer, hav-
ing come from Perthshire, Scotland, to
Canada in. 1812, with the fathor of the
late Hon. Mr. Sandfield Macdonald. He
was engaged in the lumbering business,
side by side with that honored man for,
. seven yeaas, and in 1812-14 took an ac-
tive part in the war along the borders,
being a Most pronounced loyalist. In
1837 he came to Nissouri and settled
• down, rernaining on the farm till his
death.

commence at 1 o'clock sharp. All horses entered
must beready to start in t eir reopective races at
