They tell of a Kentucky school-uiaster
who had his wife for a pupil, and found
it necessary to chastise her one day. !Next
clay a notice appeared on the door, saying,
"School closed for one week—schoolt-mas-
ter is ill."
—A young man in a neighboring town
advertises that be wants to become the
son-in-law of some respectable and reli-
able party. "Is willing to marry a young
lady with an incumbrance of a small
farm." It is gratifying to see such an
exhibition of self-denial in these degener-
ate days.
—John M'L., beadle, gravedigger, aid
town bellman of B--, was passing
along a street of the above named tov*n
one day, when a would.be wag acc(osted
him with, "John, did ye hear that :lr illie
Geddes' cuddy was dead?"' "Ay, sin, I
did," replied John, "an' I was justlwon-
dertn' boo you, bens' his nearest relation,
hadna been wast to mak' arrangeuients
for the burial,"
—Dean Stanley thus explains wh the
term "blue" was originally appli to
Presbyterians :-"The distinct dress of
the Scotch Presbyterian clergy was
blue gown and a broad blue bonnet. Th
Episcopal clergy, on the contrary, a the
wore no distinctive dress in public] ser
vices, or else wore a black gown. Irro
this arose the contrastiug epithets of
`Black Prelacy' and 'The Blue Presby-
terians.'"

room -last spring neglected to put a covet
over the stovepipe hole in the wall. On
goinginto the room one clay last Week
the ady of'the house was surprised to
find it full of swallows, which attacked
and drove her speedily from the room, It
was a considerable time before the birds
could be driven out.
—A west side man who saw a loan of
coal at,a house and arranged to go over
and borrow part of it after the other pian
was in 'bed, got around that night and
found that it had all been put in the cel-
lar and carefully locked up before night-
fall. He remarked the next day thaft it
was shocking to think how little trust-
fulness people seemed to have in human
nature. c

The Big Brother.
There is nobody in the household w
has so many chances to make the r
happy as the big brother. He is t
pride and delight of his father and mot
er, and the younger children fairly wo
ship him. Bis sisters are ready to
what ever he wishesand unless he is ve
unkind and disobliging they are qu
right in this disposition ; for the b
brother is always supposed to be a m
ly, generous fellow, willing to help wea
er people, and ready to lend a hand
those who need it.
I remember one big brother whom
greatly admired. He was about 18 yea
old, tall, and broad -shouldered, with
faint shadow of a moustache on his upp
lip. Be was studying hard for his pr
fession, but there was not a moment wh
he would not lay his books aside to sol
• a difficulty for Lulu or Jennie, wh
parsing troubled them; and he nevi
said an ungentle word to his little broth
ten years his junior, who came to hi
with his kites, and skate -straps, and bro
en toys, to be mended. The manly b
brother lost nothing by his kindness an
suavity, and now that he is a physicia
a little bald, and with boys of his own to
bring up, the same gentleness of demea
or recommends him to patients an
friends. -
Some boys seem to think it very fine
affect bluntness and rudeness of mann
at home. They take off' their hats vet
gallantly to the young Iadies who resirj
in the opposite house, but it is too mu
trouble to be courteous to their own vii,
tens, They scorn the idea of eneumbej
ing themselves with a little brother to
cousin who wants to go and see a proces
sion or to accnrnpany them on an excue
sion. It does involve some self-sacrifice
to give up one's careless independence on
a jour ney and be responsible for the
safety of a child ; but then, if all the
world were looking out simply for itself,
where would the happiness go to?
Believe me, boys, that the people for
whose opinion you really care will value
and honor you far more for your habitual
tenderness, good nature, steadiness, and
patience. with those who are younge
than yourselves, than for your moat bril-f
liant performance in the school -room. If`
you are tempted sornetitees to he cross;
and petulant, to say sarcastic things to
those who cannot easily answer them,
and to snub your little sisters and broth-
ers, ask yourselves whether or not, after
all, yot+ (lo not love the home folks bet-
ter than any others in the world? Are
you not sure of their love for you j? ,;Then
is it not worth while to be amiable and
lovely to those whose love makes earth's!
sunshine, and whose absence would make
earth dark indeed ? I often think if we
were all more careful to be kind in little
things we would be repaid by the comfort
we should have in our own consciences,
It is very easy to say a gruff word when!
a gentle, word would he the right one. but
to most boys there is apt to be a trouble
some prick afterwards. A kind anti I
pteaga.nt -word, even in the way of re -I
roof, costs no more than a gruff one, and j
is a hundred -fold better, If you doubts
it, try it,---Jlargccrv:t E, Sangster.
