ence must give them as severe tor ure for
their meanness as any punishm nt the
law can inflict. The fire brigs • e also
rendered good service with the ngine.
It is true that after -the fire got fairly
started the engine had not muc • effect
upon the flames, but there was no water
enough in Seaforth had there ben one
hundred engines to apply it to s os the
'fire in the midst of the wooden b info
where it originated. The engine as, in
the main, well managed and did g od ser-
vice, and had it not been for it he fire
would undoubtedly have been wo e than
it was. During the fire several ceived
severe scratches and wounds, bu none
were seriously injured. It was als pleas-
ing to notice the orderly manner i which
all conducted themselves, both during
and after the fire. There were few at
any time who were the worse of liquor.
This is something new at fires, and. con-
sidering the very hard work which was
done and the length of time the fire lasted
it is most creditable to the people of Sea
forth, and more especially to the young
men, that a drunken man on the streets
at any time thoughout tb,e mornin or the
day was a rare exception. The re ection
af the fire was visible for severe miles
around, and. large numbers of ountry
people came into town about 4 o'clock in
the naorning. During Monday and Tues-
day large numbers of people frondi Clin-
ton, Goderich, Mitchell, Cerro brook,
Brussels,- and other places came to town
to view the scene of the fire. The °now-
