Goodfellow, of Mitchell,
has "sltyugled " for parts unknown, and
taken with him the money he received
from the ingurance company for damages
in the late fire, amounting to $400. This
circumstance will go far in confirming
the belief that the fire -was caused by
an incendiary.
—A
ary.named Skelton, a resident of
Logan township, left last week for parts
unknown. He had in his possession a
pair of horses belonging to Mr. Alex.
Mitchell, of Mitchell, which he bartered
or sold before leaving. Mr. Mitchell,
we believe, has had a lively time getting
possession of the horses from the parties
who held them, but he got them.
Notice is given that application will
be made to the Parliament of Canada, at
the session thereof holden next after the
expiration of six months from the date
of this notice (3rd August), by Mary Jane
Bates, of the town of Mitchell, in the
County of Perth, and Province of On-
tario, for a bill of divorce from Norman
Adna Bates, her husband, of Portsmouth,

ed. to have taken
lace at Actonville between two highly
respectable and well-known French
Canadian gentlemen of Montreal a few
days ago. It appears that previous to
the duel the two combatants had. a set-to
with fists in the city, but not feeling
satisfied with the punishment inflicted
on each other in this manner, pistols
were ordered and a duel arranged. The
party returned to the city after the
"honor"- of both had been duly satisfied,
one of the duellists having received a
dangerous wound in his arm.
-The number of post office savings
banks in Canada was in June, 1868, 81,
and in June, -1876, 279. Deposits in
1569 were made by 16,653 persons, and
in 1876 by 38,647. The greatest number
was in 1874, nanael 45,329. The amount
deposited in 1869 vas $927,885'land in
1876, $1,626,204. The total deposits
from 1869 to 1876, inclusive, were $14,-
983,252. There h s been very little fall-
ing off on account f the depression. All
deposits DOW draw 4 per cent,, whether
casual or special.. The balance due de-
positors at the end of June 1876, was $2,•
740,952.59.
-Mr. John assidy, McGillivray,
threshed a field of fall wheat, treadwell.
In June, and in fa t up to a week pre-
vious to cutting, he really thought he
wonld have 40 bus els to the acre. He
considers himself row well off getting 18
bushels to the acr4 and this too from the
machine, because hen the grain is put
through the fanning mill there will be a
further reduction of 4 or 5 bushels to the
aere. This is accolinted for by the very
large percentage of tailings and shrivelled
wheat prevalent this ,year. We know
another farmer who had 90 bushels from
the machine, from 9 acres, but when put
through the fanning mill he had only 30
bushels of marketable grain altogether.
-Mr. Leslie Johnston, of London,
Ont., says the Belleville Ontario, has
been during the last three months pros-
pecting in Marmora and Madoc townships,
40 says that they are rich in mineral
ores. He is satisfied that gold And silver
are to be found in sufficient quantity to
pay handsomely, if the mines are prop-
etly worked. He has already expended
large sums of money out there, and has
teken horue valuable specimens of ore,
Which he intends to have tested, and
should the result prove satisfactory, he
intends to return -bringing with him the
necessary means to develop certain land
Purchasedby him while out in the back
country.

hibition, which will be held. in Hamilton
on Sept. 18th, 19th, 20th, 21st and 22nd,
ii now ready and can be obtained from
the secretary, Mr. H. C. Thomson, Ham -
+,on. It is absolutely required that the
eetrief; must be made at the 1 following
dates Horses cattle, sheep, swine,

cultural purposes'and manufactures gen-

produce, ladies' work, fine arts, etc., Sat-

-The increase of murderous assaults
in the community has been so marked of
late that it becoMee a matter for very
serious eonsideration whether the more
g neral adoption of the lash as a deter -
✓ nt would not have a powerful influence
i4 restraining the passions of the criminal
c Ass. In London'when the garroting
flogging broke out, ogging was found to
b speedy and effective remedy for the
e il. The scoundrel who cared little for
year or two's confinement in the "stone
g," and who, upon completing his term
oi imprisonment, returned to and improv-
edi upon his old. courses, was invariably
brought to reason by an introduction to
to the whipping post. A similar system
in this country would, we believe, have
amostsalutary influence in repressing
erime.
-The officials in the Registrar Gener-
al's office at Toronto, have, we under-
stand, been finding fault witk some of the
township Clerks in that county for the
meagre character of the returns of births,
marriages and deaths, made to the De-
partment. We suppose the Municipal
clerks invarialjty return all that are re-
turned to them -and that is just about
all they can do, for it would be unreason-
able to expect township clerks to travel
through the length and, breadth of • a
township and.call et every house every
few weeks, for theepurpose Of hunting up
such information, when they are only al-
lowed 10 cents for each registration. If
theRegistration Act is to be properly en.
forced, some other system of compelling
medical men and others to give the requir-
ed information to Division Registrars
must be introduced.
-An accident which, unfortunately,
terminated fatally, occurred about two
miles east of Berlin, on Tuesday morning
last. On that morning Mr. NoahC.

Waterloo township, was engaged in pull-
