Prayer. -
There is wa►ated' a morning prayer for
`children, mated in simplicity of thought
and language with the well-known even-
ing prayer :
Now lay me iioRn to sleep
"Ipray thaLord my soul to k
, eep;
- If I should die before I wake, •
I pray the Lord my soul tot e.
The need for such a prayer was ecently
brought to the attention of the writer by
a•little orphan girl, just five years of age,
who came to his study and asked him to
get for her a little prayer to say of morn-
ings just like the one she said of nights.
before going to sleep. Diligent search
was made, and several morning prayers
; for children were found ; but on, reading,
them to the little girl it became evident
that -no one of them was exactly adapted
t6 the case. She said of them, " Thep
are all too long or too hard." Then she,
said to me, with great earnestness,
"Please, Bir, won't you write [for me a
little prayer for the morning, just like
the one I say of nights ?" I could not
do less than promise the - child that I•
would try to make or find for her such a
prayer as she desired. As an attempt
in this direction I have produced the fol-
lowing lines,Iwbich I offer to mothers
and children till something better shall
be furnished. They are very far, from
perfect, but if they. only provoke some
'one to produce such'a morning prayer for
the little ones as is really wanted, they
will have served a good purpose I:
As I begin another day,
I pray the Lord' to guard my way ;
In all I do before the night, •
I pray the Lord to guide me right.
Queen Victoria's Pic-1Ti'cs.
The Queen's walks and drive's are not
confined within her own policies. She
crosses the Dee almostdaily, land is quite
as often seen on the opposite side of the:
river. She always uses an open carriage,
but not always the same. Sometimes it is
a wagonette, sometimes a low pony phae-
ton. Her guard of honor. accompanies the
royal equipage, however John Brown sits
on the box beside the coachman, and ,
when there is not room there he rides on •
horseback by the side of the carriage.. No
fuss attends the Queen. An outrider, a
little in advance of the royal carriage,
clearsthe road, and the Queen goes quiet-
ly on her way, with a smile and a nod
for any who chance to meet her! But, as
a rule, her Majesty is not intruded upon
when she ventures beyond the royal
domains, unless on Sunday, and then it
is strangers only who run after her, the
cottagers do not annoy her, and she comes
and goes without molestatiotil. -Indeed, •
they make it a point of keepiii "out of
the way when the white horse of, the out
rider appears,insigbt. Should the Queen,
however,happen to come unexpectedly on'
her subjects by Deeside, she is defferen-
tially acknowledged. The Queen and her
ladies frequently pic-nic in the woods, or
on the hillside, should it be handier.
Materials for making a fire, ,and cooking
utensils are taken in the carriage, and tea
is made on the green sward and handed
round in rustic fashion, without any
ceremony. At these afternoon " teas "
the Queen has no special chair of honor.
Her seat is pretty often on the; stump of
a tree, with her 'cup in her hand, or any
other casual resting place that turns up
conveniently. Excursions are that,
also
to various places . of interest, and every
corrie and glen within reach has been
visited by the royal family..
Toa Late for. the Boat.
The woman who arrived at the wharf
just as'the excursion boat had a start of
ten feet didn't comprehend the situation
for 'a moment. She didn't know but
that boats; had a habit of starting off and
and backing up to keep the machinery
from getting rusty. When she realised
that she was being left, she jabbed a
man in the back with her elbow, knock-
ed a hat off with her'parasel, and squeal-
ed at the top of her voice :
" Hold on there you haven't got me !"
" Make a jump- !" screamed one boy ;
Swim for it !" called out another ;
while the "left woman" fiercely shouted :
" Why don't some of • you folks up
there tell the captain ?"
The people on the upper dedk replied
by laughing and waving their handker-
chiefs. The woman on the wharf recog-
nized only one among the crowd, and
pointing her parasol directly at her, and
holding it extended, as if taking- aim,
she shouted :
"You want to understand, Mrs. Ba-
ker, that you can never, never borrow
any more butter or flat irons of me !'—

A Newspaper Man's Conscience
Scruples. -
When a certain ' quasi -religious paper
was started, the publisher, whom we
will call. B.., was waited on by the chair-
man of the Executive Committee of the
American Press Association (Mr. H.)
and asked if he would not purchase the
news from that association.
B. asked, " Does your association col-
lect and transmit news on the Sabbath ?"
Certainy," replied H., " all press as-
seciations do."
"Then," said B., "I cannot take it,
for I will not purchase of any association
that thus breaks the Sabbath day."
"But; ' said Mr. H., " you intend to
• publish a paper on Mondays, don't you ?"
" Certainly." said B., " Monday after-
noons."
" Where will you get your news,
Mr. B."

Ostrich Trade.
Mr. A. Douglass, an English settler in
the. Cape Colony, South Africa, com-
menced experiments [about • eight years
ago with six ostriches, He' has now
about 300 on hand, having sold 85. Each
bird eats about 20 pounds of vegetable
matter per day, and the net profit from
the sale of birds and feathers is stated at
$125,000 in the last four,: years. The
cost of the beginnings of ' the experiment
is not given. The birds are hatched by
artificial means, and the process requires
42 days. In natural hatching, 1 egg in
10 fails ; in the -artificial process, 1 in 12.
The work of raising ostriches for their
feathers has also been commenced in
California. The enormous proflte tempt
experiment, yet changes of fasMon:.m$y
on any day make even ostrich feathers
of little value. Whenever anyone who
chooses may command a plume, ostrich
may degenerate into hen's feathers in a
fashionable estimation.
