Women, as a rule, suffer a good deal em wash of pocket money. Young men seed in their bills to their fathers, and have generally a sum wholly independent Of nen:So •s, e-, psi:to spend nn,they Please, . while their sisters nave usually only an allowance for dress. In ordinary news, and particularly where there are litany girls of one fay, l i tlas.,.ligvartc 11ot one calculates► -any s yr n the milliner's bill is paid. :1is young lately spoke with regret of - the ignorant young women who dabble in literature werdly for the ehanca.of earning ,a few pounds. -She perhaps for a moment forgot of how much importance even ;a few shillings may be to a person who finds it impossible to make her income ,coYerlier inen'itable, expenses. Girls are often iiubjected to painful humiliations when staying at friends' houses merely on account of this dearth of pocket -money. They are, perhaps,. forced to_ allow gen- tlemen with whom they, are only slight- ly acquainted to flay for cabs or for an. .admission to a picture gallery or a flower _Show, They stiffer agonies trom not be- ing able to give tips to servants, But, worst of all, theylose-that nice sensitive- ness in money matters which ought to be most carefully nurtured, and which of late seems.to have gone out of fashion. It is cruel and wicked of parents to per- mit their children to be placed in circum- stances where they are tempted.to, p themselves ins.der . obligations -1n from whom they have no right to receive them. A girl, out of ignorance and im- pecuniosity, may find herself placed in an equivocal ' position .° from vbieb she does not'feel a le to get free'; and cruel embarassment may be caused because she bad not a few shillings in her purse when she wanted them. As a rule, a married woman in the middle classes is not much better off than her unmarried sister in the matter of ;p9cket-mepey, i•' she has not brought her= heisbsindtiny fortune, and if she is unhappily burdened with a con- science. She finds herself in possession of house -money and dress -money, and being probably inexperienced in manage- ment she finds it hard enough to keep within her allowance. She never feels as if she could call a few pounds her own, and. is depinved of mat small pleasures, and eann neeessaries, which her husband would never dream of refusing to himself. This is one of the reasons why ladies' clubs are -not at present likely to become very numerous. Clubs pre- supposeia certain amount of pocket money which a woman has not hitherto been supposed to require,„ A man would feel that life was not worthi.having if he h'ad to account for every cab, cigar, brandy and soda ; but a lady who is obliged . to balance her weekly books would have, to chronicle the small beer she gave to, a friend at lunch and all her afternoon cups` of tea. She might, however:take ref- uge in the convenient item of sundries which fill an important place in most fe- male account books. Being obliged to do without money, and to empty the hitherto fairly abundant half-crowns into the family purse is the real trial of a young man's life when he marries on the same income which he has hitherto spent on himself. He must remain very' much in love with wife and home if he does not sometimes regret the jingle of the sovereigns that were in his pocket which were not mortgaged to house rent or,ser- vants' wages. It will be well if he al- ways remembers that he cannot both have his cake and eat it. This is the impossi- bility aimed at by many artisans. They encumber themselves with a wife, and countless children, and then feel ag- grieved if they cannot have as much money to spend on beer, tobacco, and music halls as their single comrades.- Saturday Review. He Wasn't a Vegetarian. Jones is arinter— a morning paper printer. Works six days a week, and wishes he could get in eight. _Is he mean ? Well, you bet. So mean that when the night editor "asked the boys out" the other day, Jones said that he would. take 10 cents for his share. That ain't all. The other day apoor, emaciat- ed, broken-down tramp`striiek the office. He had been, waltzing over railroad `ties and plank roads, 'until his "rn©crasins" were completely played out, and is gen- eral appearance suggested his , ability to net away with a square meal in a winkl- ing, In fact he looked about as t as a Nebraska grasshopper, Jones opened his heart when " the stranger" told his sad tale of hard luck=" No chuck for three days, sleeping under rail fences, heels blistered," etc., -wand. he , resorted to make the poor tramp's heart glad. He " couldn't afford " to put him on his case that day, but he would bring him down a "lunch" when he went to super, and speak to sane of "the boys" in ;his behalf. The stranger's eyes bespoke the gratitude which filled his heart, and, he wrung Jones's hand in a cordial man- ner. Jones looked amiable and phil- anthrophic, so much so that the query - went around the office, "WhiUt's got into t Jones?" ,supper time came; tinct the boys filed off to their respective- board- ing-houses. The stranger looked loving- ly at Jones as he departed, and visions of sirloin steaks, ham sandwiches, mince pie, etc., loomed up before his expressive optics. His mouth watered, and he sat himself down on an empty type -boxy to count the minutesuntil the return of his generous provider. After nearly; an hour's suspense Jones hove in sight, hugging a large-sized dinner pail. , 'The stranger prepared for business. Hisyes glistened as lie removed an extensive "thaw " of the noxious weed from; his mouth and., carefully` deposited it in Jones's cap case. The pail was handed him by Jones with a' few words of sympathy forhissad condition, and a fervent wish from: the doner that he should cat heerti- l.Y, and make a meal. The stranger as- sured him he would, and he nervously tugged away at the lid of the pail. Finally it flow open, and thea contents proved to be two slices of wf ernlelon and a diminutive tomato, The look of disgust which overspread the counten- ance of that tramp will never fade from the memory of those, who wee observers of the scene, and with a withering look he turned to Jones and remarked : ' " Say, pard, although I have tackled peaches in Jcreey, oranges . in Florida, and pawpaws in Kansas, I'm blowed if I'tn a vo$etarian. As this lunch is not quite solid enough for me, I'll have to call a new deal." - A peal of laughter went up from the boys as they took in the situation; and the tramp was generously provided for by all hands axce t Jones, who 'vows that " tramps can't appreciate a'good thing when they get it.
