As Others See Us. A correspondent from Galt having visit- ed Seafortle, thus writes to the Ref°, mer of that town, concerning Seaforth, its surroundings, and toine of its residents : The flourishing town of Seaforth is 56 lanes west of Paris, 24 miles west of Stratford, and 21 miles ettSe of Goderich, ort the Baffalo and LakeHuron branch of thaGrand Trunk Railway. It is eon - fleeted by stage with Brussehe. Baytield and Zurich. Sehforth has grown ,tito prominence within the last 15 yeare. Twenty years ago a log hut and a. beaver meadow marked the site where the town now sand. I have been told, by several ela settlers that when they came here they could. have obtained the land le and adjoining where Seaforth now is for the taking up of it, but they would no, take it on any account whatever. Tiey have since re. pented, however, as the beaver tneadow is now covered with a bustling populatioe. Until a. few years ago the town depended entirely on the traffic of the farming community, this beteg one of the best farming seettoos in canaoa. people from Brussels, Exetervolved to his jeippen, Zuric.hm e.1 age. As land was not of much value then, and as they had what was very rare among the -early settlers, considerable money, they procured a large tract of first-class land at a good aderantage. Mr. Whitelaw has removed to Seaforth, and is now busily engaged in erecting suitable buildings., Seaforth is the most extensive salt manu- facturing eentre in Ontario, there being' no fewer than eight werks erected.! Au inexhaustible supply of salt is obtained at a depth of about 1,100 feet. When, the en- terprise was first started, some six years ago,it was very profitable, salt being much. higher in price than at the present time. The proprietors of the first well, Messrs., Coleman & Gouinlock, must have made a pretty "good thing" out of it for two or three years. But others went into the business and the market became glut- ted, the result being that salt cannot now be manufactured to pay at pres- ent prices. The Seaforth and Goder- ich works are now partially closed up. This is unfortunate, as a large number of • of men have been throWn outemployment. The quality of the fluron salt is first- class and is acknowledged to be equal to the Liverpool and American salt for dairy purposes. Several of the Seaforth manu- facturers are exhibiting samples of !their salt at the Centennial. The inhabitants • are more "nixed." than those of Galt although the Scot& . are predominant. The British Isles are almost evenly re- presented, with a sprinkling of Geeman. There is also a number of Canadian Scotch from different parts of Ca nada, a nd among them a number from the County of Waterloo, A more shrewd class of e. ith earl settlers. ns reqUir d a con - of wo kmen, d here long be emerged from th was calle Egmont' rs.
