The Huron Expositor, 1876-07-07, Page 6Trotting Horses for Business Meng Horsemanship is well worthy of culti- vation, and in this country, where the trotter, as a road horse, !plays such an im- portant part in the life! of the business man, the art of skillful driving should be encouraged. Any one int all conversant with the habits of the glen of business in the large cities of the United States, is aware of the hygienic effects of a fondness for driving fast. 'those men who make a daily practice of airing themselves behind a fast trotter, are the healthy successful ` men of the day. A few instances will be sufficient : Commodore `Vanderbilt, with over eight -tenths of al century on his head, is as straight as an arrow, healthy, as capable, physically, ¢f overlooking his vast business interests es he *as 40 years ago. Mr. Robt. Bonner was forced to take out -door exercisegolf account of fail- ing health a good many years ago, and now he is as vigorous in mind and body as it is possible for a main toles ; and we could multiply instances indefinitely of the benefits of this recreation. It is not ascribable to the exercises alone, but, in our opinion, is due to the relief the mind enjoys from absorbing cares. We defy auy man--non-mercurial though he be to brood over annoyances of great pro- jects when he is driving fast, especially if he is "brushing" with a competitor, He has abundant occupation in managing his horse, and the excitement hinges on the race he is going an the chances of victory. The American trotter has been a boon to o the business men of America beyond price, It is iinpossiblie he enjoys the benefits of the hunting field which his foreign contemporaries have the advan- tage of, as that sport is unknown in the vicinity of the large cities, and in Eng- land they have to give a vacation to the following of the hounds. Here there is nothing to induce equestrianship, An easy ramble or slow gallop through the park is well enough to take the fresh air, ut there is little real relief to the ten- sion of the nerves. The main difficulty of the active business man of the present day is the unceasing requirements of his duties straining brain and the more deli- cate organization which radiates from the dome of thought, which is yclept nerves, He cannot plod along in the old-time channels and be sites sful, If he does not think and act quickly, he must sur- render to those who do ; and in order that his faculties may perform their part there must be relief in the hours which he is free. The fast trotter and the light' road wagon meet this want more than anything else, It combines exercise and --recreation, and is within the require-, menta of his business. __The day's occu- pation being ended—w ich rarely is after 4 P. M.—the two hoar between that and dinner give ample tune to trot out through the park, and have a whirl around the graded circle at the Bay dis tries, or a brush on the road with some one on the same errand. It exhilarates, it changes the current of the blood ; for, al though the tired pulse is throbbing over the temples, it is a feverish effort, and now the sanguine fluid is bounding through the arteries after the lungs have decarbonized it from the dross of the of- fice and counting room. y Cherish your trotters, ye men of vast speculations, of enchaining business alluremeuts, of great enterprises, He lengthens your days by decades of years, he brightens your, intel- lects, sharpens your faculties ; he puts a new lining in the scabbard which the keen blade has cut—exorcises the demon of un- rest.—California ;Spirit, Fifty -Six Years an Invalid. — Miss Ruth W. Burgess who died in . Plymouth on Saturday, at the age of 64 years, began to be afflictedwhen about 8 years of age by having "fits or convul- sions, and finally a paralysis of the right eye, Soon after this she was afflicted with dropsy, and her cure of this disease has a somewhat remarkable incident, e Her brother being in Demarara, consult- ed a French physician in regard to' her, who gave him some medicine that effect- ed a cure. - VTon being invested, it prow - ea to he cannabis, or Indian hemp, which 1 from that time has been used by the faculty here with great successin cases of dropsy. Soon after this she recover- ed the use of her eye, hut lost her eye- sight entirely for some time, and has had only partial sight since. Soon after this her health improvedmaterially so that she was able to walk across the room, but in a short time, she began to have spasms or convulsions of the most painful character upon her left side. Her left leg would be drawn back and twist- ed wisted until the sole of her foot would rest upon her right shoulder. This was gradu ally brought back, but had to be tied i order to keep it in its place, -and from that time until her death had general' to be secured. It is now about 20 year since this has been necessary. Afte this a contraction of the Organs of th throat came on so that she was unable t swallow.' A set of instruments was mad in Boston under the direction of her phy siciau by which the constriction was par- tially removed, so that semi-liquid sub stances could be forced down her throat with an instrument made for that pur- lpose. Never after was she; able to swat ow any but very soft substances. - In- dications of consumption snow showe.- themselves, and she soon presented every appearance of a person in the last stages o this disease, so much so that her phy- sician on going off for a few weeks told her mother that he should probably never see her again. Yet, wonderful. to tell., she recovered entirely from this. She then began to have abscesses of the liver, and her body was so swollen that her breast bone was even with her chin. Bat a cough set in and she begat to raise mat - Physiologists in some way almost neredible to Physiologists for about six days, when a change took place. Her s veiling went away and left her almost a skeleton, so reduced was she. But she r covered from this. During these years, nd while un- dergoing all this, she had the rneasels, scarlet fever, small -pox, a xd itch, and these diseases went. throughltheir regular course. She had .been bed -ridden now n m 8 r e 0 e d Lot don B4ilclet•, for more than 20 years, living in this manner, and has survived a family con- sisting of father and mother four broth- ers, and two sisters, all of v 'nom were of , good health and constitutipn, During sonic of the attacks of conbulsione her head and feet would be drawn backward so that they would meet anren ain in this position for 18 hours. Under all these afflictions she hore up with a sweet and patient temper. For some time she kept a little shop, having shelves put up on the wall by her bed and Within reach of her right hand, the only one she was able to use, and here she sold a little confectionery and small thins.
