have been more than ever impressed with
the fact that in this very neighborhood,
perhaps in the town itself, there exists
gang of thieves, and. murderer,. who
plan their wicked deeds here avid carry
them into operation 11n other parts. In
fact $oiile whose sources of information
are at least a Iittlt more to,be relied upon
titan others- --the inytbical authorities"
inial ed--sayunhesita inglythatthegang
which all believe to exist here is com-
posed of members from other parts of
the country .as well. In fact ilamilton,
Brantford, London and Sarnia are sus-
pected to be their principal rendezvous,
where such deeds as ssuit"their particular
line of business are planned. In sub-
stantiation of this suspicion it may be
remembered that the ,Petit robbery was
so Cted, in feet almost proven, to have
ha coadjutors in this town, while the
Monaghan murder was Apposed to be
another of the dark deeds planned in our
midst. These instances are enough to
draw the attention of the public to the
main factthat lawlessness exiets, and
that it ought to be most effectually
fought aoainst by those whose business it
is to see that criminals get their due.
The ease, however, whish has brought
the existing state of affairs more directly
before the public is • the Brook burglary
at Caiiisville, on the 23c1 of May, when
Iwo of the burglars were shot by Mr.
Brock, into whose house they had brok-
en, One of the men died the following
morning, refusing to let it be known who
be or his colleagues were, It was sub-
sequently settled that his name was
Fleming. Popular suspicionat once
placed two other notorious characters as
his confederates, and on Tuesday morn-
ing it was hinted in town that another
;man had died from a gun shot woundin
the neck, in the Indian woods. This
man's name is given as Bartram., and be
is one of those who were supposed to be
in Flenting's company an the night that
Mr, Brock's .Mousse was entered. In a
case where -many circumstances point to
certain parties as the culprits, it may be
wondered at that no• active .measures
have been taken -for the apprehension of
the offenders. The whole; trouble ap-
pears to be fear. The doctors who oper-
ated on the dead man Bertram rade no
disclosures, They were mysteriously
taken from their residences and driven to
alspotthey cannot or will not reeogmize,
and there awaited upon their patient.
The doctors were taken at different
times ---one from Ancaster and one from.
Onondaao. From the latter all that is
known iethat a man in the Indian woods
died. from what appeared to be a gunshot
wound in the neck. Before dying this
man gave his tame as John Bartram, and
confessed. that Peace (or Foss) and Smith
(Fleming, also known as Tyler) were
with him on the night of the Cainsville
tragedy. The dying man said that Smith
--who was known as " Samson among
his chums -was a "game b—r," .. but
that Peace was a coward, and was the
first man to run. I3artrani said it was
the second sihcit that struck him ; after
being shot he said he walked around the
clover patch to confuse the tracks, AB
farass can be aseertaincd that is all he
said, his last words being that " Smith
- was a game boy," 13artranits death was
caused by mortification setting in the
wound of his neck, The police have
attempted to do something about this
matter, but have been utterly unable to
find where the body is buried, and it ap-
pessrss that without the body no inquest
or legalinquirycan takeplace, ft is to
be hoped. that this case will be looked af-
ter, and a vigorous effort made to track
the third man, whoever he is.
The Moon and the Weather.
MI:. EDITOR r The belief seems to be
very prevalent among people of this,coun-
try that the moon is connected in some
way or other withthe changes of. the
weather. As soon as we have what is
stated a new moon, we hear the remark
coming perhaps from more than one per-
son, that it is a dry or wet moon, as the
case may be. When the weather is wet
it is said " it will clear up when the moon
changes," If the new moon is "well on
its back so as to hold. the water in," it is
said. " we will have dry weather, &c."
Now, I never could see how the moon
had anything to do with -the weather.
Time after time I have seen our limed
weather prophets astray in their predic-
tions, If weather was general through-
out the whole earth, there might be some
excuse for supposing that the moon had
something to do with it ; but as this is
not the case, as weather is local, raining
m this country, having a wet spell as it is
called, while other countries are suffering
from drought, how can the moon be
the cause of the sitateof the weather?
There is another theory in connection
with the moon ago' t sowing grain when
it is nearing fall, so as to- insure a good
crop ; also that of slaughtering at the
same time so that the meat will not fry
intd gravcy, &e. But these are so absurd
that they are Scarce worthy of; notice, as
any person of common intelligence
can easily test them for themselves and
see the foolishness of them.
STANLEY, June 12, 1875.

From Ballet to Bon Ton.
The latest matrimonial romance of the
stage is rather more romantic than the
average run of the afaires de mar, The
leading partner of a well-known and very
wealthy firm of London Solicitors, while
enjoying an evening at a theatre, was
smitten with the charms of a certain lady
of the corps de ballet. Something hap
pened, Tiie rich lawyer, not over young
himself, but with intentions strictly hon-
orable, obtained an introduction to the
fascinating coryphee, and very soon the
acquaintance ended in marriage, he over
60 she under 20. The handsome girl
belonged to a humble family of 11 chil-
dren, and by one of those outbreaks of
(generosity which elderly solicitors so rare-
ly commit, he has undertaken to support
the whole batch of them. The new wife,
too, must be fitted for a position " unto
which she was not born," and the doting
husband has accordingly engaged masters
of "all the aecomplie ments" to give her
lessons, Mr. Me occupies a splendid man-
sion in the West End, and ,employs half
a dozen servants to minister to his wants.
On certain days, I am told, the ex -ballet
girl, seated in an elegantly appointed car-
riage, drives her pair of ponies far away
from the Vest End to her mother's abode
in street -an event which produces
no small sensation among the gossips in
that humble neighborhood. From what
I learn the lady is worthy the good for-
tune which has so unexpectedly fern `o
