• An Ichthyological Phenomenon.
The quiet serenity of the little village
of Blissville, Sunbury County, New
Brunswick, was disturbed th e other day
by the announcement of a young !lady
that; the ice of South Branch Oromocto
was- covered with fish. No sooner. was
the 'fact made known than an - anxious
crowd, composed of men and boys, was
seetilurrying to and fro, each one desir-
ous of securing as'much of the spoil as
possible. Even some of the fairer sex, be-
ing carried away by the general excite-
ment, joined themselves to the multitudu-
ous throng, and went away looking for
fcsk. In an increditably short time hun-
dreds were assembled on the ice which
was literally covered with coke from two
to four feet in length. In fact, it was
almost impossible to move without crush-
ing beneath the pedal extremity some
poor innocent creature, which had been
ejected into the ethereal medium through
no mismanagement of its own. There
was none of the jostling, pain , and
grabbing, which -one would naturally ex•
pect;among the spectators under such cir-
cumstances ; but each one worked away
with the regularity of an.eight-day chro-
nometer. The more thoughtful, having
provided themselves with baskets,' &c.,
carried them away by the bushel, while
others, whose equanimity had' been so
disturbed by the excitement as not to
make any light provision, were obliged to
content themselves with what they cold
conveniently hang on a two -forked stick.
For the benefit of philosophical souls, who
wish to trace a connection between cause
and effect, we subjoin the reason for this
extraordinary occurrence. The late thaw
and rain very much increased the volume
of water which was still further augment-
ed by hoisting the gates at Smith's mill,
several miles above. This caused the
water to rush up through air -holes, and
flow over the surface of the ice. At the
same time, immense shoals of casks were
ascending the stream for the purpose of
spawning, and in pressing under the air
holes, were brought to the surface by the
upward current aid carried back over
the ice, and thus left a helpless prey in
the pitcivorous inhabitants of Blissville.
--St. John Telegraph.
Man's Microscopic Enemies.
The name " trichina spiralis" comes
from two Greek words signifying hair
and curled, alluding to the hair-like form
of the animal and the curled position
which it assumes in the cells in which it
is found, in the muscular system, The
male worm measures only one -twentieth
of an inch in length ; the female is a little
longer. It was discovered by Professor
Owen in a portion of human muscle sent
to him from St. Bartholomew's Hospital
n 1834.
In. a few hours after the diseased sneat
rated'from it are found free in that organ.
Thence they pass into the duodenum,
nd afterward into the small intestine,
where they are developed. On the third
r feurth day eggs are discovered, these
eggs! being alive, as we have found to be
the ease in other analogous, larvie of
hich we have specimens, From the in-
testines and other cavities where the
oung are first produced they penetrate
nto the substance of the muscles, Where
ometimes as early as three days ,after
the [diseased meat is taken into. the
stomach they may be found in consider-
ble; numbers, and so far developed ' that
the young entozoa have lmost ettoined
a siza equal to that of th full growu tri•
chaise, Their Progressiv ly advance into
the interior of the small humlles of mus-
cular fibre, where they may be often seen
veral in a file, one after, the other. Be-
hind them the muscular tissue becomes
atrophied, that is hardened, and. around
them an irritation is set up which ,ends
in producing a cyst in about two weeks,
Thies it will be seen that the whole ma-
culae system is filled with these parasites ,
each one the central point of inflamma-
t on, and. of course of terrible suffering,
until the friendly hand of death closes
the scene.
These cases, we think, must be more
frequent than is generally supposed, from
our having so many brought to our no -
e within a short time, and this fact
would be a good reason for entirely giv-
hig up swine s flesh as an article of food.
But there isi a sure preventive for all this.
