Observing in the last number of your
Taper a eh""ort telegraphic announcement
of the arrival in Shelburne, Nova Scotia,
of three tame moose, en route to .Euro,
in charge of a widow named Sane il-
liamson; their captor, it strikes me that
a few facts in cogqnection wf th her and
her exploits in thel forest may not be un-
interesting to yo ;r readers It seems
that four years go, on taking up her
residence at Beap Meadows, about 11
miles from .She1btit ne,N. S., Mrs. William-
son (who, by the ay, is a bright -looking,.
neat lady, ,like wo en below the medium
size) conceived an idea that it would be
a profitable business to capture young
moose and rear th m until thley became a.
saleable; age ; alio all the ri . icule of her
family and friends failed to s ake;her de-
termination. In t e season 1873 about
the middle of Mayl Mrs. Will mson with
her dog " Watch, ' made he first hunt
for thein, and, afger one or two unsuc-
cessful trips, during each of which . she.
has traveled from aylight to dark over a
distanceof from to .39 m les, she, on
her last trip, sure edea in ca turing'two,
and triumphant returned home with
them. The next season, 18 4, she cap-:
tired three, and the past eason five.
When about five onths of they have
all been sold. T o of the were pur-
chased by Mr. Cal in Appleton, and ship-
to the United State's ; t e others by
• r. Downs, -of 't ie- 2oologi al Garden,
Halifax; and sent to the cro ned heads
in Europe --two of them to icter Em-
manuel,' King of I aly.
The Indians has e a sayin respecting
moose calves well llustratin their rapid
development in their power of locomol
tion, which is—hien
"One day old, it tn1 eH°a man to deli them;
Two days old, it tack s a dog to c tch them;
Three days old, the —1 can't e tell them."
Mrs. Williams° 's plan of campaign is.
this.: Her dog is s trained t at when he
first scents moose 1 e starts o rapidly and
stealthily in adva,ce of her, tnd if there
is a youngster to apture lie quietly re-
turns to her, gives her asilen signal, and
takes the lead again at a par to suit her,
and proceeds to tl •ive o' th mother by
iatrison ties
s together.

Mrs. Williamso t, after tyi g their legs
together, carries totem home. When there
are two, as is generally the; :ase, she ear -
riot one, ahead at a time, depo: its it on the
ground, and returns for .thee her. In this
way she has seve al times t. aveled over
10 miles, getting 1 oma at in dnight with
thein, after ming away fro A daylight in
the morning, On one of the a trips night
overtook her whe a long di tance from
home, and she w compelle . to leave the
two calves under trees an return for
them in the morn' ng.
After keeping t iem stable► for aweek
or two they Have ells hung tl their necks
and are, allowed roam at large every
morning, returnin of their own accord
at dusk every e -ening, wh n they are
stabled for the • ight, disp aying great
docility and intel gence.
Although the:i others are generally so
afraid of dogs as o run away and aban-
don their ofsprin at the first attack of
one, it seems the a are exceptions. . In
the season of 187` the dog fo ght•for over
two hours unsuc.essfully tr ing to drive
off a mother, and 'vjrs. Willi mson at last
appearing in sig t in the istanco the
moose made a f rious rush at her, and
she had barely ti e to reacils the upper
limbs of a tree wh n the moose struck the
lower branch es with her forefeet, tearing
huge strips fronei it, and nearly swaying
Mrs.. Williamson rom her seat. Had it
not been for th dog the slender tree
would have doub less been b ought to the
ground and Mrs. Williams killed, but
` Watch " so •w cried and exasperated
the moose that s e was co pelled to de
silt and give al her atte tion to him
while he tolled h r off some 'stance. On
this oceasiou the oose pro ed the vic-
tor, and Mrs. Wi liamson w s compelled
to get home with ut the ea Reaching
home at noon she at once, wi h two of her
boys, returned, mid near th scene of the
morning's encounter came across the
moose and calf. For a lon r time the old
moose stood fight, not with}standing the
stones hurled at er and the dog's fierce
attacks, the animf l makingg f riot's rushes
at the boys and one at Mrs Williamson
which she barely avoided b dodging be-
hind a large rock. as the m++ose with the
dog barking in advance, parsed close by
her abandoning the unequal ontest and
Mrs. Williamson secured t e' youngster
and safely reecheil home ith him at.
