About Teeth.
The following paper on teeth, wa
read at the recerie meeting of ths (Dan
adieu Dental Association :
F
"WHY DO TEETH, DECAY ?"
ProieseOr Smith, of Philadelphia
pointed out that persons came from Eng
land and Ireland, to this continent with
perfeet teeth, but after being here for a
- kw year their teeth commenced to de -
y, simply because they did. not have
that kind. of nourishment the teeth re-
Anothet eason why teeth decay
is from the shape of the teeth„ their re-
lations to each other and self -cleansing
features. The first tooth that deceys is
the six year malar. It is thought by
some that the six year antler tooth ought
not to be extractei. IE WAS well known
that this tooth wee the very best one in
the arch, it possesses more vitality than
any other tooth, a d it is the best tooth
for mastication, atilt one which by all
means they ghoul( try to preserve. On
the shape of the le eth depends -in a great
raeasure the teudeucy to decay. If teeth
are crowded toget ter they are liable to
{decay. Another mportant point is the
!character of the a eencies which come in
contact with the ecth. It is th.ought
that the acid cond. tion of the oral cavity
of the teeth is ti e cause of lc y, but
four-fifths of the ni al cavities of the teeth
- are not in fin acid c dition, the decay be-
aar caused b3r an alkaline condition of
the teeth. Medic merits do not cause -
decay to anything like the extent that
some believe.
theories of Profes,

a the first referred to a rejAy that had jtist
been 'received from 13e 'cher ; whereas,
the fact is, that tvl r. Beech.ery did- not
know of the letters having been. received
until long after the lady had ceased
writing, and then th.e bundle was deliv-
ered to him. He receives love lettere by
the ream and cord, and the joke of it is

rrhe good effects of the 6 ntario Central eeeR
Prison are already being argely experi-
enced, especially in the larger cities. A
city contemporary remarks : ” It may be
an interesting fact to many of our order -
loving readers to know that the Central c.
.Prison in Toronto is inspiring a -terror 0

ore than ever rr;
-
TH
e pointed out the
or Garrison, of Phil-
adelphia; and Dr. .lagg, as to the decay
of teeth. Dr. gg says that he never
saw a case in wh co medicaments had
caused decay-. It s not the acids them-
selves that do the •
.1ischief, but the dis-
• ease that requires 0 administration of
the medicine. He did not mean to say
that there are no teeth in which the
cause of decay is ram the use of medi-
cine. He. related n instance in which
his own child. h cl her teeth injured
through the acid c ntained in the medi-
cine adininistereel her. If teeth are
of that shape wh ch makes the surface
self -cleansing, thos teeth will resist de-
cay far better -than others. When there
• is a show of incipi nt deca-y, the teeth
should be separate 1, which can be done
With advantage z the teeth and the
patient. He asser ed. that it wasfrom:
the alkaline condi on of the mouth and
rot the acid condit on that was the cause
of a large per cen age of decay in . the
teeth. It was al aline, and not acid,
they had to fight against. Another
cause of decay is parasites which Dr.
Flagg says simply withdraw from the
teeth the potulum which
rathey appro-
priate to thesel -es. ParasiteS work
not in the day tiro. when the teeth are
in use but these ar found. at work wheu
all action in the Mc nth is stopped; it is
in the latter part the night that para -
sits' work most., The more the teeth
are lased_ the better ha,
ey cn resist decay.-
Theilarge portly n who has a good
appetite has teeth 1, hide will reast de-
cay far better than hose who do iot eat
much or eat burri- dly. The moVe the
teeth are used the ore they are exclud-
ed from destructien. It is only in dys-
peptic individuals, eople who sleep with
their mouth open snore a good
deal, the„t have pare ites at work on their
teeth with greater e ergy than other pee -
pie have.
