skilful enough to hit. his- bird every

going off straight, estinm on its

Good News for the Pigeons.
We learn that an English - gentle-
reran named G. S. Bussey, of an
antimalitarian turn of mind, has in-
vented a steel pigeon, which - is to
take the place of live birds in shoot-
ing match -s. -The _gentleman has
not been actuated solely by a desire
eto prevent cruelty to animals, His
,;avowed object was to " Ford un
t limited sport at a comparatively
small cost ' but if his machine be-
comes widely adopted, the benevo-
lent ideas of Mr. Bergh, will be
furthered without an appeal 'to the
stern rigors of the law. The inven-
tion is called - a " gyro -pigeon." It
consists of a steel fan formed very
much -like the toy known as an
aei ial top. The fan is made to rise
by a rotary motion given to it by a
spring. Tne gyro -pigeon was re-
cently on exhibition at the Museum
f Fire Arms, Rye - lane, Peckham,
Taming animals.
Severity is neither required nor
practiced by -successful tamers of
wild animals. There is no course of
treatment that so. quickly and effec-
tually s'ibdues the ferocity of savage
beastsorbirds as repetitions of kind-
ness. Even lions, tigers, the grizzly
bear of California, and the polar
bear may be taught acts of obedience
by simply gaining their confidence.
As soon as they are satisfied that no
harm is intended, of which- all car-
nivorous - animals seem to entertair>a
an - instinctive apprehension at the
hand of man, they become docile,
coinparativel:y, as far as compatible
undera deprivation of liberty, and
regard him as a friend.
Fear should not be excited. A
single blow is never forgotten, since
ever after they stand on the defen-
sive ; nor can their distrust be over-
come with some of them by years of
tender -intercourse. In the process
of breaking horses and- oxen, which
simply means teaching them what
is expected of them, neither whips
nor chains are necessary, Repeti-
tions of kind acts, with soft words,
never fail of being understood by
them.
