trite Manitoba Winter - Palestine

Coreexporttlence of the Huron Expositor.
PALESTINE, Manitoba,
Jan. 10th, 1872.
The winter set in about the 21st of No-
vomber. There was a slight fall of snovr
[. before the 2Ist, but did not last long.
Ifecember and January are generally the
I most' severe of the winter months in
'E Manitoba, and this winter, the natives
tell us; has been the coldest there has
[been for a. num* of years, - in fact, i1
their expeiienee -the therinoineter, varY

ing from twenty to thirty and as low as
forty degrees below Zero. .
Now, after- having lived in Manitoba.
for the last nine months, and having had
a good deal of experience in travelling
through the:country, I can verily assert
that I never Bait a more pleasant or. con-
genial winter *Canada -411y native land
--Lthan. I have spent in Red River this
.seasen. This being the conclusion ar-
-rived at, in speaking Of the climate as a
..general thing all over the Province. '.
Now, to confine myself to that section
.of the nountry in which I havelocatecl,
-called Palestuie,° from its beautiful ap-
pearance -where the, serenity of the
...climate, the numberless pleasing landscapes, and. the productiveness of the
. soil render it the most lovely country
that can be imagined. The winter is ex-
- tremely mild, the snowonly falling to
the depth of ten Or -twelve 'inches. the
' frost entering the gi•ound only About
four or five inches. The days are clear,
the sun shirting pleasantly all the day
long. We do irt experience any of those
-colcl blustering atoms to which the Ca-
nadian winters I are subjeeted. And, al-
though in sorae parts of this Province,.
"John prest" ;appears to get irritated,
and SeeMs desirous of seizing the inhabi-
tants -with an icy hand, still We.think.
notwithstanding this, tliat the winter of.
Manitoba is of a more agreeable and
pleasant nature than that of Ontarid.
Palestine is situated about 'seventy
-miles west of -Winnipeg, on the third
(.-.rOssing of the White Mud River. The
soil of this district is extremely 'fertile
.and well wooded. On the whole, it is
wall -calculated to.make one of the -best
grain -producing and stock -raising coim,`
tries in this Western Continent. Horses
and. cattle live ;well on the prairie hay, of
-which any amount can be had during
the °summer season for the cutting of it.
The price of horses iro; the country
varies from two to three hundred dollars
accotding to the ,quality. Oxen. from
one- to two hundred dollars per pair;
Cows from thirty to seventy dollars
each. Stock, as a general thing, is not
so high this year, on account, of tbe
large quantities of hay that have ben
consumed by the prairie fires, of which
there were a great many in this Province,
- on account of the remarkable dry season,
destroying not only uncut grass but
large quantities of hay after it had even
been stored away in stacks by the farni-
,,
