Correspondence of The Duro?: EaTositor.
" LONDON, Nov. 13; 1871.
We have a very vexatious ques-
tion in London among our news-
papers as to which is the greatest.
The A lvertiser claims to have a cir-
culation gleater than that of the
other two combined. The Herald
retalia es indignantly and persists
that it: is the largest in the city, and
tries y ry hard to mitke:i otheis be-
lieve f. The Free _Press, seeing
there no sight to make an impres-
sion in this point, declares itself to
be wortlf all the rest,—and so the
-war (roes on. Who to believe it is
hardat tell, or how to -settle the
quest' n no one knows. One thing
is certk in, they have all forgotton
the Bi de rule, each to esteem others
better han itself, youisee we have
to bent the wordiug a little tu make
it appl,.
The reat tire of Monday • night,
resultia g in the complete destruction
of the riagnihcent establisliment
Mr. M orhead and some other Small-
er firm., has had a beneficial result
in stirring up our City fathers to take
steps w secure efficient waterworks.
It is pr posed to bring water from
Pond IV ilis, a distance of six miles.
The 1)01 ds are considerably highei
than ti e city, and ' power can he
secured to force the water into all
parts of the city; and throw a stream
,case if fire 150 to 200 feet high.
On T Lesday night, an attempt was
made' to fire the large row of frame
buildings situated on King ,street.
and extending from Richmond street
to the mark -et. Had the rascal been
successful, their would have been no
hope of tireventing the entire block
from buruaina. Persons are kept
on the look out for incendiarism.
Londen's growth this year is very
rapid, scarcely a block but has been
improved by some fine addition. Ex-
ensive buildirgs are going up in
z.he refinery district. The Messrs.
Duffield are putting up large bairel
works, and. when co.mpleted will
