THE HURON EXPOSITOR.
The Elder Sister.
There is no charter in the homo
•-.circle more useful and,beautiful than
a devoted elder sister who stands
side by side with the toiling mother,
lightening all her -cares and burdens.
How beautifully the household . ma.
chinery moves on with such effieient
help! Now she preeides aathe table
in her mother's absence, always -*a).
neatly attired that it is with pride'
- and pleasure the. father introduces
her to his guest as our oldest daugh-
ter." . Now she takes a little troop
wail her into the garden and HUMS -
,es them, so mother may not be dis-
turbed in her Rork or her rest,
Now she helps the ooys over their
hardlessons, or reads father's paper
-aloud to rest his tired eyes. a.f 'ne-
ther can nut away for a few days re-
creation she leaves home without
anxiety, for May will guide the
house wisely end happily in her ab-
sence. But in the sieK room her
presence is a4 especial blessing.
Her hand is next to mother's own
in gentleness and skill. Her sweet
music -can oharin away pain, and
brighten the weariest hours. There
sre elder rvisters whtise irresence is
not such a blessing in the house.
'Their own selfish ends and aims are
the main pursuits of life, and any-
thing that stands irithe WH,V of these
is regarded with great iwpatieuce.
.$-6-6-Cdaughters are no comfort to a
mother's heart. Which kinu of an
eider sister are you in the household?
Neatly Trapped
One day last week, says the Guelph
_Mercury, a lady arrived here from
Loncton by the Grano Trunk and
.. put up at one of our pincipal hotels.
' I3y the next train arrived a gentle-
man—a prominent resident of the
-'‘•Forest City "—who also took
rooms at the same.imtel. The land-
lord having his su. neions aroused,
paid a visit to the gent's room same
tune after the latter had retired,
- and found it empty. "Mine hot"
went down stairs, beized the long
iron bar -room poker, and tied it across
the door of the lady's room in such a
manner. that it could not be opened
from the inside, 'and then proceeded
,to await developments. About day.:
light a violent ringing of the bell an-
nounced that " somebody " -wanted
to get out of the lady's aoorn, and
upon repairing thither was the Lon-
don Loam! io eiscovered standing in-.
- side the door with a very humiliated
aspect A scene ensued, resulting
in the ignominious expulsion of the
(lere:ict couple, who vainly protested
that it was "all a mistake, " ' Boni-
face declares that he don't allow
.suCh " mistakes" to occur in his
house. -
-Good Temper -1' Oiling -Wheels.
The great moral lubricator which
makes everything in human life run
w it1ou t fr ictien, is gocd temper.
As soon as, t -his is exhausted, the
journals ofatliediuman maehine be-
gin to and- wear, and screech,
-and the entire mechar,isni beeernes
Voisy and ruinously wastefully of
;power.
" The horse that frets, is the
horse tleit sweats," is an old saying
of harsemen, and ib is just as true of
men as of horses. The man. that al-
Tovs to get irritated at every
little thing that goes amiss in his
-business, or in the ordinary affairs -of
life, is a man that as a rule, will ac-
complish littleand wear out early.
• He IS a man for wnom Isfle and dy5_
pepsia. have a "particular fondness,
and for whom obeedren have a par-
ticiaar aveasion. IJt is a man with
a perpetuAI thorn in. his &sir, which
pricks and wounds at the -slightest
'movement ; a .rei an for whom life
has little' pleasure, and the future
small hope.
To keep joliy -" under all 'provo-
cations, is perhaps a, task which only
Dickens' Mark Tapley could per-
form. We never have met ,Mark
Tai ley in our experience ef human
nature, but we have seen him close-
ly approximated ; and it would be
well if people in general, could ap-
proaeli more nearly that inimitable
-character-.
In all the phases, emergencies
and occ na ti, ,of human life, good
temper is a commodity for which,
the, e is great demand ; but in those
which bring an individual into daily
conteet with many others, it is per-
hape in greatest demand and most
limited supply„ _
Cor- eat Speaking.
We would advise all young peo-
ple to Require, in. early life, the
habit of correct speaking and writ-
_
ing ; and to abandon, as early as
possible, any use of slang sym ds and
phrases The longer you live,the
more d i fliou It the language will be ;
and if the golden age of youth, the
p ro pe r season for the a -eq u is iti on
of language, be passed in its abuse,
he unfortunate victimif neglected
-1s, very properly, doomed to talk
-Slang for life. Money is not neces:
aary to procure this education.:
Ev erv man has it in his power.
He has merely to use the language
which he reads, instead of the slang
which he hears ; to form his taste
fro ni the best of speakers and poets
in the country, ; to treasure.up choice
, .
phrases in mg Memory and habituate
himself to their use, avoiding at the
same titne that pe'dantie precianm
and bombast -livhieh show the weak-
ness of vain ambition, rather than -
the polish of n educated mind.
