• Fresident Grant's Colt.
President Grant is so unfortunate
as co possess a colt with a sore
His distress of mind is thus deserib-
, ed by a Washington. correspondent:
We would not like to guarantee the
truth of the letter but give it for
what it is worth : Grant has se r •ely
elept since the colt was taken sick
except when under the influence of
sedatis e;. Tne sore tail seemed a
source of constant auxiety and
doubt. The foreign war, the treaty,
the revision of the Cabinet, the Con-
kling-Fentou fight, the New 1York
Collectorship, Ben Wade, Marshal
Brown's pups, express packages,
Boutwell and Pleasonton, his dear
relation -s -yes, even his piety -all
were forgotten in. his eoncern tor
the sore tailed colt. Daily bulletins
were sent him at Long Branch as to
the condition of the tail, its size,
. general appearance, number of hairs
lost during the day, number remain-
ing, the status of the colt's appetite,
her diet, the condition of her bowels,
and such other facts, as, in the
opinion of the doctor, would prove
interesting to the devoted owner

The Best- Society.
"No company, or good company,"
• was a motto given by a distuaguished
man to all his young friends. It
was a motto he had always endeavor-
ed to follow as far as in his power,
and it was a very wise one. The
• directions of the Bible are Many
with regard to evil COM pany, and all
through it we are taught to shun
such society, kat we get a snare to
Our souls.
Another of high position in. tbe
world makes it a rule to associate
-with highminded, •intelligent 4n;
• rather than with fashonable idlets ;
and he said be had derived more in-
tellectual improvement frome them
than froin all the books he ever
• read.
Sir Fowell Buxton often spoke of
the great benefits he bad derived
froM his visits to the Gurney; family.
• Their words stimulated him to make
the most of his powers. " It ha• s
giyen a Nwer to my whole life," he
said. Speaking of his sueceSs fat the
• -University, he remarked : "1 can
ascribe it to nothing but my visits to
this family, where I caught the in-
fection of self-improvement."
Surely, if our visits have such an
inflaence upon our life, it should be.
a matter of oerious importance to us
in what familieswe allow ourselves
to be intimate. Boys and girls form
attachments very easily, and often
with little forethought. In this, as
in all things else, you should not
fail to take advice of those who a -re
older and -wiser, and never choose
fur a friend one against whom you
have been waxned by those who
dearly love you.
There are people whose very pres-
ence seems to lift you up into a
better, higher atmosphere. Choose
such associates Whenever it is in
your power, and the more you- can
liven their society, the better for
-both mind and heart. "He that
• walketh with wise men shall be wise;
but a COM pauion of fools shall be de-
s troy ed.
tween the' roflers at the back, which,
being ,capablie of being forced close
together, ar apt to couupletely
de oralize these 'ironielads.'"

Carbolic Acid.
In pasting wall papers, posters
etc.,• especially where successive
layers are put on, there arises a most
disagreeable effluvia, -which is per-
ticalarly noticeable in damp weather.
• The came of tnis is the decoliaposi-
tion of the paste. • In close rooms it
• is very unwholesome, and • the cause
of disease. • In large 'manufactories,
'where large quantities of paste is
used, it • often becomes :sour and
offensive: Glue, also, has often a
very disagreeable odor. If, when
intiking paste or glue, a small
quantity of carbolic: acid is added, it
will keep sweet and free from offen-
sive smells. es. few drops added to
mucilage or ink prevents mould.
in whitewashing the cellar _ and
dairy, if an ounce of catbolic acid is
• added to each gallon of wash, it will
prevent mould and the,disagreeable
• taints often perceived in meats and
milk from damp apartments.
Another great advantage in the
• use of carbolic acid in. paste for wall-
paper, and in whitewash, it will
• drive away,‘cock-ro tches and other
insect pests The cheapest and best
form of carbolic is crystal which dis-
solves in water or liquifies at an ex-
cess of temperature.
