had Leached the hands of Cranmer ;
no fibre 4f political intrigue, or
crime, =or 6otspiracy, could be trac-
ed to the Palace of Lambeth. As the
,
tranalatieti of the Bible bears upon
it the impri t of the mind ofa Tyn-
dale, "so, wh-le the Church of Eng-
land stand, the image of. Cranmer
will be seeu reflected on the calm
surgace of the Liturgy. The most
beautiful portions of it are transla-
tions from the Breviary, -yet the
same prayers translated by others
would not be those which chime like
church bells in the ears Of the Eng-
lish child. The = addresses, which
are original, have the same silvery
melody of language and breathe the
same simplicity of spirit. Edvvarcl
VI. died before the Litutgy could
be tampered with ; and from amid
the foul weeds in which its roots
were buried, .staads up beautiful the
one adrnikble thing whic,h .this un-
happy- reign produced."
This was in 1549. Then came
1552, with the influences of the
ultra -Reformers, shrinking from
sacraments and priestly offlces ; and
then Queen Elizabeth, neither the
one thing nor the other. But the
Prayer book of Cranmer is the opus
princeps. It is the "Martyr's Monu-
ment."--Arntotzg my Books. =. .
