APRIL 14, 1871.
• n Evening at Dr. OrmiEtt • n's.
From tht Y. ndependent.
Following the idea which led is
to give our jeaders sketches of Dr.
- Hall and Mr. Talmage, we have been
making a little study of the Caiiit
diaa Sootehmen - who has so sud-
denly. shone ant in our pulpit firma-
ment. It is not often that a great
divine is transplanted to
so.late in life, and it is
Provincia
L metro!
Still 1110r rare that a minister corn
ing to the city rather past middle life
is successful. Dr. Ormiston does not
lack for critics and &lilt fieders. Ile
is sim ple-hearted, frank, enthusiastic;
in private conversation, Lind reserv
ed city people are apt soraetimes to
mistake for egotism t and vanity
-the fresh-heartetl est;erness with
which he ipiteles to his work. But
it is this ray trait, provincial as it
seem), that is a large element of his
success. No man can do anything
excelleut who does not rejoice in the
.doing of it, mud to repress all ex-
pression Of pleasure in one's work
and success is a cold-.1:looded affecta
flan; and affectation of any. sort is
impossible to the stur3y, earnest
maa whose speech in a filth -avenue
chuach is like a fresh northern blast
laden 1,viat the oder of pines.
Dr. Ormistoii is a typical Scotch -
man. In gown, cassock and band,
the square shoulders aid the great
bony frame are yet apparent, while
every individual Celtic hair stands
in a state of absolute iadiatiqn from
his head. As he is forehead bald,
and wears side -Whiskers, the face of
the preacher atop of the -gown looks
much like one „of the old almanac
pictures of the sun.
- Last Sunday evening"Dr. Ormis-
ton presidia' On the alternative
offered by Joshua in the "Choose
ye this ,day whoni yewil1 s4ye."
lie read the chapter i'vith great
force and emphasis, and his sermon
.was interestiag and effeative from
first to last: He has not the tine -
ton that makes Dr. Hall's 'speech
drop as the dew; he has not the
humor, that makes Mr. Talmage the
centre of -so much interest ; and yet
• he has both unction and humor in
no mean degree. In faet, it is hard.
analyze Dr. Ormiaton. Of grace-
fulness of composition or delivery
he has none. He is direct, positive,
and often exceedingly epigramatic.
But doubtless the chief secret of his
power lies in what Mr. Wilkinson
would call his "vicarious conscience."
There ia a steady, in fact, an al-
most unremitting pressure upon the
consciences of his hearers. He Will
sometimes walk around the '.pulpit,
uttering commonplaces for a minute
or two, and then blaze out in a sen-
tence that schorches like a flash of
lightning.. "He seems," said an able
• lawyer by our side, "to compact a
thought into a bullet, and then hurl
it at you." .At slid" InOnlent his
gesticulation and voice rise with the
.
projectila force of a strong and ve-
hement man. At other times he
speaks slowly, solemnly, almost aw-
fully. When he alluded to fature
punishment, it was always in this
last manner.
His creed is entirely orthodox. Not
for a moment does he seem to re-
cognize, even objectively, the possi-
bility of error i4 the form of doctrine
which he, as a cotch Presbyterian,
holds hi comm( ir with the Dutch
Reformed Ch usch of which he is.
pastor. The doctrines are not coa-
elusions• with hitua but Prises..
From these he makes his start and
travels toward the_ strongest and
most pointed motives that he can
get for the influencitig of h Milan de-
cision.
Seine of bis sentences are very
fine. Speakillig of procrastination be
said of Herod : "He heard John
gladly and asked to see Christ; he
mocked the one and beheaded. the
other." As he tuttered it, thiS sen-
tence thrilled- the whole audience.
His epithets are !often capital, -One
climax of denunciation was capped
with " dou ble minded, world -grasp-
ing, Christ -catching Christians ?”.
To the half-hearted he said again :
"As it is, yoa're but a miserable
sun aut of the devil, for h -e hasn't
over half your heart." .And with
the -utmost soleminity he said : "All
that is necessary to do to he damned
is just to stand still." We cannot
possibly give on paper any idea .of
the half -droll and halt solerne 'way.
in which he said : "Ephraim is joined
to his idols ; let him alone. How
many are there of that tribe here to!.-'
night Nor of the directness with
which he shot out an at at c‘g.ray
haired sinners nodding over the
tomb." Many passages were cliama-
tie and full of pictuieSqueliess, and
all of his effective utterances are
iudescribable. Perhaps the finest
climax of the sermbil was when -lie
uttered in his peculiar 'and almost
thunderous way, thi sentence:
Thai e's not an atheistic atom in the
UniVertio ; and 'then, springing for-
ward, he -added, " and -there's not a
silent conscience in this house " In
the silence that followed it seemed
that the very rafters were crying out
58 witnessea for God.
Nor for • its intellectual results,
perhaps, but far its high moral dis-

ton is exceedingly valuable and
