Blue Flag Program receives funding by Municipality of Bluewater
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
VARNA This isn t normally what we
do, said Bluewater Deputy Mayor Dave
Johnston at a council meeting Dec. 15.
Johnston was responding to a request that
council approve funding of $13,000 for the
Blue Flag program before the municipality
went through its regular budgeting pro-
cess.
General manager of municipal services
Jim Bryson said the funding request was
part of the application program for the
municipality to be approved as a Blue Flag
beach at the Bayfield beach and marina and
that the applications had to be submitted by
the second week of January.
Johnston asked Bryson if not approving
the Blue Flag budget before Bluewater ap-
proved its own budget would jeopardize
the application procedure. Bryson replied
that it would but that of the $13,000, $4,000
was already approved in the operating bud-
get as part of ongoing expenses.
Bryson added that the amount could be
reduced by a grant from the Rural Econom-
ic Development (RED) the municipality was
applying for.
Johnston said nobody is telling us what
the budget (for Blue Flag) is...what is the
figure? Bryson replied, I need $9,000.
A motion was passed approving $9,000
for Blue Flag expenses.
In other business, three members of the
South Huron Hospital (SHH) board of di-
rectors appeared before council to provide
an update on the operations of the hospital.
Board members Jeff Keller, Cindy Max-
field and Ernie Miatello spoke to council
and Keller said board members were going
to all the councils in the area to communi-
cate a picture of what the hospital is doing.
Keller said while SHH is fiscally respon-
sible some of the challenges it faces are that
it doesn t have negotiating powers with its
unions and that inflation on equipment is
unbelievable.
The successes of the hospital, said Keller,
include the emergency renovations that
give patients more privacy as well as the set
up of an infection control unit.
Keller credited SHH chief executive offi-
cer Deb Hunt with the credit for the work at
the hospital. We ve got a good team, said
Keller.
Bluewater Mayor Bill Dowson noted that
there isn t a hospital in Bluewater and that
its residents go to the four located around
it.
Dowson said Bluewater has been trying
to set money aside for requests from local
hospital boards. We fell off last year...but
we do what we can.
Raises
Bluewater s 33 full time and two part time
employees will get a cost of living raise af-
ter a motion was passed at the meeting.
It was decided by council after a briefing
from Bryson and CAO Lori Wolfe. The raise
will be equivalent to the November Con-
sumer Price Index that was to be announced
after the meeting.
