Hay Mutual shows off new facilities
y at Bolen
ZURICH The result of four years of plan-
ning by Hay Mutual in Zurich was shown off
last week with an open house by the compa-
ny at its new office at 37868 Zurich-Hensall
Road.
General manager Shawn Durnin said four
years ago the company sourced the property
since Hay had outgrown the office in Zurich
where it had been located for 30 years.
Durnin said in early 2007, planning began
with construction starting in October.
The company moved into its new home in
September.
The new building is 8,500 square feet, com-
pared to 3,500 in its old building and Durnin
said it leaves room for future expansion.
In the expanded space said Durnin, is more
room for files with a safe and archive room.
Another priority during construction, said
Durnin was customer access, with emphasis
on making the entrance inviting and roomy.
Durnin thanked Hay s partners and said of
its policy holders, this is their building, come
and ask for a tour.

Donations accepted at Women's Shelter of Huron
HURON There are some basic
needs on the Christmas wish list of the
staff and residents of the Women s Shel-
ter, Second Stage Housing and Coun-
selling Services of Huron this season.
The centres in Exeter, Clinton and
Goderich are hoping that some simple
gifts from the community will help
women and their children have a better
holiday and new year.
Topping the list are basic needs such
as large bottles of shampoo and condi-
tioner, new underwear for women and
children, towels, blankets, comforters,
pyjamas and slippers. The centres will
also accept donations of non-perishable
food items and more traditional gifts
which women and children (girls and
boys up to age 16) may want to find
under the tree.
The gifts are also used throughout
the year as birthday presents. For those
wishing to make a more sizeable do-
nation, there is a need for winter coats
and boots for women and children.
Any donation, including money, can
be dropped off at the Goderich Centre,
376 Huron Road, near the M&M Meat
Shop. Donations can also be mailed
to P.O. Box 334, Goderich, Ont., N7A
4C6.
"We know that many people want to
reach out and help others at this time of
year," says executive director Michele
Hansen. "Sometimes, even the small-
est or simplest of gifts, like a bottle of
shampoo or a pair of slippers, can re-
ally help us help women as they try
to re-establish their lives. We are com-
mitted to supporting women and their
children as we all work together to end
violence."
Hansen also stresses that this is an im-
portant time of year for family, friends
and neighbours to be extra supportive
of women and their children who may
be in abusive situations. She urges com-
munity members to reach out with in-
formation about their 24-hour helpline
(1-800-265-5506) and for community
members to know that the centres are
ready to help women and their children
at any time holidays or otherwise.
"We are resolved to end violence
against women and their children,"
Hansen said. "We are here to help and
to provide counselling, housing and
shelter. No woman or her child should
stay in a dangerous environment at
Christmas or any other time of the
year."

DUBLIN After looking within its
own organization to name a succes-
sor to outgoing director of education
Larry Langan by choosing education
superintendent Martha Dutrizac the
Huron -Perth Catholic District School
Board has again appointed one of its
own to a top-level administrative post.
At a special meeting Nov. 10, trustees
approved the appointment of JoAnn
MacGregor currently principal of St.
Ambrose elementary school in Strat-
ford to take over from Dutrizac.
Langan s retirement, along with the
changes that flow from his departure,
take effect Jan. 1, 2009.
"JoAnn is a person with energy and
enthusiasm, with a sound work ethic.
She is well prepared for the supervisory
officer position for this school board,"
said board chairperson Bernard Murray
in a news release.
MacGregor has been principal at the
Stratford school which has a student
population of about 300 for two years.
She began her education service as a
second career in 1990 at the London
and District Catholic School Board,
working as a classroom teacher, prin-
cipal and finally staff development of-
ficer, before being recruited to St. Am-
brose.
"I mhopingto start, unofficially, a tran-
sition as soon as possible," MacGregor
said in an interview from the school.
She noted she will need a transition as
she takes over Dutrizac s responsibili-
ties which include all 16 of the board s
elementary schools, as well as special
education and information technology.
A good foundation has already been
laid in that regard, since the past two
years have allowed her to make strong
connections with the board s other
principals.
But she s also eager to begin a transi-
tion for the person who will take over
as principal at St. Ambrose.
