It's consumed in the form of high fructose coin syrup found in thousands of processed foods and drinks. This food additive is cited as one of the principal causes of the increasing obesity in our population. Read those nutrition labels on the food you buy and try to cut down on the sugar you eat. Canada allows a maximum of 0.5 parts of mercury per million as a safe amount in fish. The fish with the lowest amounts of mercury include salm- on, commercially -sold rainbow trout and tilapia. These fish contain less that one-tenth the maximum allowed. Fish like halibut, tuna and sablefish have higher concentrations of mercury but still below the maximum allowed. There are many drops and gels on the market to treat dry eyes. Dry eyes is a condition resulting from not having enough tears available to lubricate the eye. This results in a feeling of grittiness, itching and general discomfort in the eye. Speaking of eyes, one of the very first "antibiotic" ointments used for eye infections was yellow mercuric oxide salve, first used in 1862 and was still in use one hundred years later. There are many better and safer products available today. In today's highly computerized world, there is so much information available about drugs and drug therapy. We encourage increasing your knowledge about the drugs you use and also encourage your talking to your pharmacist if you need clarification of any of this knowledge. Huron Apothecary Ltd.
