Medway finishes fourth at OFSAA
By Ben Forrest
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
PETERBOROUGH The
Medway High School field
hockey team came up just
shy of the top three at the re-
cent OFSAA championship,
losing their bronze medal
game to Forest Heights of
the Waterloo Region.
They ended up fourth in
the province, which coach
Dana Kajan considers pret-
ty darn good.
Medway won its pool at
the event, beating out Jacob
Hespeler Secondary School
of Cambridge.
By finishing first in Pool
D, Medway earned the
chance to play the second -
place team in Pool C Ap-
plewood Heights in an
OFSAA quarterfinal.
The final score against
Applewood was 4-1, a rela-
tively easy victory in Ka-
jan s mind.
In their ensuing semi-final,
Medway faced St. John's -
Kilmarnock of Breslau, los-
ing 4-2.
We were the only team
in all of OFSAA to score
more than one goal against
them, noted Kajan. We
were close to scoring a third,
even though they defeated
us 4-2. So I was pretty proud
of (our team) for that.
Medway progressed to the
bronze medal game, where
they faced Forest Heights,
losing 2-0.
We had lots of scor-
ing opportunities, we just
couldn t finish it and put it
in the net, Kajan said.
Kajan noted Medway s fi-
nal two games were played
on turf rather than grass,
something her squad was
unaccustomed to.
We play all year on grass
and don t have an opportu-
nity to play a lot on turf,
she said. It s a very differ-
ent game, speedwise and
skill -wise from grass to turf.
Had we been on grass, it
may have been a different
outcome, she added.
Grade 11 student Carolyn
Vanderploeg was Medway s
top scorer at the OFSAA
tournament, scoring five or
six goals which is nearly
unheard of, Kajan said.
Kajan struggled to name a
single player who led Med-
way in its pursuit of a pro-
vincial title, however.
I can t really pick out one
person that led our team, be-
cause we do play so well as
a group, she said. There
really isn t one player that
stands out in our team, un-
like some other teams. I
wouldn t want to single
anyone out.
Despite finishing out-
side the top three, Kajan is
pleased with Medway s ef-
fort, and pleased her play-
ers had the chance to go to
OFSAA at all.
This has definitely been a
successful season for Med-
way, she said. I think we
could have maybe placed a
little higher, but we re not
disappointed at all.
We re very happy with
fourth place. You get a med-
al for that too, so the girls
are quite happy. They get
to come home with some
hardware, so that s good.
She noted that two of her
players were in their fifth
year of high school and
had come back to play field
hockey as well as further
their studies.
For them to be able to get
this in their fifth year, it s
great for them, she said.
Great memories, and the
girls were just so positive
throughout the whole tour-
nament. I m so pleased.

Lucan Irish sit in third place,
within striking distance of first
By Ben Forrest

LUCAN The Lucan Irish remain in
third place but within striking distance
of first after consecutive wins against
Lambeth.
The Irish beat Lambeth 3-2 in overtime on
Nov 19 and 4-3 on Nov. 22.
In the Nov 19 game Lucan s Tyler Medd
opened the scoring in the first period on a
goal assisted by Adam Hartman and Kevin
Dean.
Dustin McTaggart added to Lucan s lead
early in the second period on a power play
goal assisted by Jeff Boyd and Nick Engel.
Lambeth answered back late in the period,
then scored again early in the third period
to tie the game. Engel then scored the win-
ning goal one minute and 20 seconds into
overtime.
I thought we played a pretty good
game, said Irish coach Russ Morningstar.
Our effort was there, we just couldn t get
the handle on the puck at times. It seemed
to be bouncing off our sticks.
I know you create your own bounces,
but it just seemed that we were fighting the
puck the whole game, he added.
He noted the Irish players ultimately bore
down and found a way to win.
That s one thing I m really pleased with,
he said. No matter what the score is late
in the game or early in the game, we never
seem to quit.
Morningstar was less enthused about his
team s effort in the first two periods of the
Nov 23 game.
We kind of just went through the mo-
tions, he said, but in the third period we
played very well.
Morningstar noted the team was down 3-1
going into the third period, but Engel re-
ally stepped up and played his game when
we needed [him].
Engel scored twice in the third period, ty-
ing the game at 3-3. Alex Regan scored the

game -winner with five seconds remaining
in the game.
If had played a full game we wouldn t
have had to come from behind, Morning-
star said, though he did not want to take
anything away from Lambeth.
They played hard, they skated hard and
they had some key goals, he said. They
brought the play to us, and they didn t let
us move the puck very well.
The Irish play first -place Mt. Bryges Fri-
day, and though it represents an opportuni-
ty to make up some room in the standings,
Morningstar isn t putting more pressure on
this game than he has on other recent con-
tests.
Regardless of who you step onto the ice
with, you ve got to be prepared, he said.
Morningstar is not content with his team s
third-place standing You always want
to be higher, he said. You never want to be
satisfied with your position and your play.
Still, Morningstar sees them making steps
in the right direction, and said he believes
the pressure is on the division s front run-
ners.
For us we re happy with what we re do-
ing right now and getting better each day,
