The Times Advocate, 2008-11-26, Page 7Wednesday, November 26, 2008 Times -Advocate 7 Remember to give to the Huron County Christmas Bureau By Rhoda Rohde THAMES ROAD CORRESPONDENT THAMES ROAD - Church service: The 1994 General Council of the United Church of Canada made the decision that Children s Sunday should be celebrated annually across the church on a Sun- day close to Nov. 20. That date was chosen to tie in with National Child Day designated by the Ca- nadian Government in 1993. Nov. 20 is also the anniversary of the United Nations ratification of the convention on the Rights of the Child (1989). Children s Sunday gives congregations an oppor- tunity to: pause and reflect on the needs, concerns, interests and skills of children in their own com- munity; pause and reflect on the quality of life for all children living in Canada; pause and reflect on the quality of life for all the world s children. Judith Parker of the worship committee lit the Christ candle. The opening hymn Jesus, Teacher, Brave and Strong was sung. Judith Parker gave words of welcome and every- one passed the Peace. The introit Let Us Praise The God of Truth was sung. Judith Parker read a poem Hold My Hand and led in the call to worship responsively and every- one read the opening prayer. Judith Parker gave the announcements and lit the red candle for Peace. Judith Parker told the children a story about pic- tures and children of God. Judith read the Old Testament Lesson. Everyone sang one verse of a medley of children s hymns: Can A Little Child Like Me, Birds Are Sing- ing, Woods Are Ringing, God Sees the Little Sparrow Fall, The Wise May Bring Their Learning, and Jesus Bids Us Shine. It was nice to sing the old hymns. The Lord s Prayer was sung in unison. Marianne Veldman, another member of the wor- ship committee led in the responsive reading of Psalm #67. The choir sang Don t Go Away Without Jesus accompanied by the pianist Marilyn Vanden- bussche. Marianne read the New Testament Lesson Ephe- sians 1:15-23. A Litany of We Are The World s Children with Beatrice Dawson (another worship committee member), Karen Etherington, Helen Kadey, Sharon Lynn, Ruth Anne Osgood, Judith Parker, and Mari- anne Veldman (led in prayer) taking part, which was really interesting. Lorne and Pat Ballantyne received the offering. The Doxology was sung and Beatrice Dawson led in the offertory prayer. Beatrice Dawson gave prayers of the children and the commissioning. Everyone read the benediction responsively. The Choral Benediction was sung by everyone. It sure was a wonderful church service. Well done.
