Exeter s Jake Jeffrey opened the scoring early in the first peri- od on a goal assisted by Thomas Harnett. Lucan answered back with two goals in the next three minutes, the first coming from Zack Yeo and the second from Jimmy Kim. Lucan increased its lead in the second period on a goal from Dustin McTaggart, but Hawks players Scott Muirhead and Har- nett scored late in the frame, eve- ning the score at 3-3. There was no further scoring until the second minute of over- time, when Exeter s Jake Jeffrey iced the victory, scoring a power play goal. Hawks coach Jamie Pearce said he was pleased with his team s effort on the night, calling it a good effort all around. As has frequently been the case this season, the Hawks goalten- ding was a strength. Our goaltending is keeping us in games, Pearce said. The whole team has won the game, but a lot of the games that we ve lost, we ve had a chance to win. Our goalies are the ones that have given us that chance. Irish coach Russ Morningstar tipped his hat to Exeter s effort, but expressed concerns about his own team s consistency level. We seem to let the other team bring things to us, he said. At times we played really well, and other times we just don t. The biggest thing for Lucan at this point in the season is try- ing to get any points you can, Morningstar said. I know that Exeter and Lam- beth are really battling, and they want to make sure they make the playoffs, he said. I m sure they re both looking up and saying, We can catch Lucan or Parkhill or whatever the case maybe. For us, we just want to keep pace and hopefully put a little string together and catch Mt. Brydges or at least catch Parkh- ill ... and challenge for those top two spots. Lucan sat third in its division at press time, behind Mt. Brydg- es and North Middlesex (Parkh- ill). They battled North Middlesex Nov. 15, losing 4-1. Lucan s lone goal came from Adam Hartman with roughly five minutes re- maining. Our effort level s there, said Morningstar. We want to skate, we want to win, so the competi- tiveness is there. It s just chan- nelling the effort in the right direction. The thing I really like about our team is that we want to win, he added. It s just some- Faceoff - Tyler Medd of the Lucan Irish and Scott Muirhead of the Exeter Hawks (16) face off in a game played Nov. 1 2in Lucan. (Photo/Ben Forrest) times you struggle to find ways to win. You 11 see a team like Mt. Bry- dges who always seem to find a way to win a hockey game, and we re just trying to discover that in Lucan. There s always a way to do it, and we ve got to figure it out. The Hawks, who sat in fourth place in the Yeck Conference at press time, also need to find ways to win. They struggled to find the right mix Nov. 14 against Thamesford, losing 8-1. Exeter s lone goal came from Harnett late in the first period. The Hawks faced a barrage of 55 shots, and surrendered five goals in the second period. It came down to a one -period lapse again. Something hap- pened in the second period, and they couldn t find the [on/off] switch, said Pearce. That s been pretty much the story all year. He cited quality victories against top teams but also games when his team has gone to sleep for a period. There s a switch there some- where, he said. I m still look- ing for it. Injuries remain a concern for Everyone is welcome to the SOUTH HURON SOCCER CLUE Annual General Meeting Wed., Nov 26 at 7:00 p.m. South Huron D.H.S. Reaching the playoffs and play- ing .500 hockey remains Pearce s goal, and one he thinks is within the team s reach. Next steps for the Irish Next up for the Irish are games against Lambeth and Wellesley two teams that are not high in the standings, but cannot be tak- en lightly, Morningstar believes. I don t think you can take any team in Junior hockey lightly, he said. You never know what s going to happen in Junior hock- ey, especially at the Jr. D level. The biggest thing for us is not to worry about who we re play- ing but let s more worry about our style and where to correct our shortcomings. Indeed, Morningstar s goal for the first 20 games of the season is to get Lucan s own house in order. Let s worry about ourselves and make sure our game plan and our style is up to par, and not worry too much about what other teams are doing right now, he said.
