Strong start for junior girls EXETER - The South Huron District High School Panthers junior girls basket- ball team started their season off with a bang in a tourna- ment in Goderich on Sept. 13. The Panthers began with a convincing 47-23 win over the Madill Mustangs. Using a stifling man -to -man defense, and a balanced attack led by Linette Melick with 12 points, Jaemi Douglas with nine and Taylor Obre with seven, the Panthers kept the Mustangs completely off balance. The Panthers then had to face the St. Anne's Eagles 16 minutes after the Madill match, as they were sched- uled in back -to -back games. After a slow start, the Panthers took control and fin- ished with a 35-15 victory. This time Jaemi Douglas led all scorers with 11 points while Taelor Douglas added nine and Gina Phouttharath found her game, pouring in eight points on the fast break. Their third and final game against the host GDCI Vikings, was both exciting and costly. The game was knotted at 23 with four seconds left when the Vikings drew a critical foul and sunk both free throws, defeating the Panthers 25-23. Phouttharath garnered seven points and Taylor Mattucci added. The costly part of the game was that Melick and Obre were injured and had to leave the game early. Coach Russ Watson was proud of the team and said two other coaches comment- ed on how well they hustled and fought. With the memory of their last -second, two-point loss to the Goderich Vikings still fresh in their minds, the team was looking for payback in their first league game against the same Vikings Sept. 17. The Panthers played their tightest man-to-man defense in full court press mode the entire game, holding the Vikings to just eight points in the first half while they scored 17. The Panthers added 35 points in the second half enroute to a 52-25 victory. Phouttharath led all scorers with 12 points, most of them on the fast break. Chelsea Brintnell turned great rebounding and several steals into 11 points while Taelor Douglas added 10, many of those also off steals. Alanna Horn had her best game yet, garnering eight points while Jaemi Douglas had six and Obre and Ashley McKnight had two. Taylor Mattucci rounded out the scoring with one free throw. This was a great prelude to the Panthers' own tourna- ment which they hosted over the weekend. The Panthers began with a convincing 37-17 win over the Central Huron Redmen Friday night, then followed it up with an equally superb effort against the St. Anne's Eagles Saturday afternoon. This gained the Panthers a birth in the championship final against the Woodstock Collegiate Red Devils. In a shaky start, the Panthers spotted the Red Devils a 12-0 lead in the first quarter, but roared back to within four points before falling short 36-42. Lucan Irish win three straight LUCAN - The Lucan Irish posted three straight wins last week to improve their record to 3-1. Sunday afternoon the Irish finished the week with a 4-2 win in Ayr. Sept. 24 the Irish had a pair of goals in the first from Adam Hartman and Patrick Van Boxmeer before Lambeth tied it in the second. Jeff Boyd gave Lucan a 3-2 lead early in the third but Lambeth tied it again with two minutes left in the game forcing an extra period. Nick Engel won it for Lucan in over- time with a goal just 49 seconds into the overtime for the 4-3 win. After defeating Exeter 6-3 Friday night, Lucan was in Ayr on Sunday and took a 2-0 lead on goals by Jonathan Cameron and Alex Regan. After Ayr tied in the second, Dustin McTaggart gave Lucan the lead again before the period was over and he sealed the win with his second of the night 43 seconds into the final period. Lucan hosts North Middlesex tonight (Wednesday) at 7:45 p.m. and are back in Exeter Friday at 8:30 p.m. Ironwood golf weekly league scores Men's Club Wrapup Club champion Darren Mason AA: Darren Mason 64, Jason Heywood 72, Dave Holtzmann 74, Adam Skillen 78, Brent McDonald 78, Marty Mitchell 79, John Rudderham 80 A: Jeff Glover 78, Scott Burton 80, Ken Pinder 81, Al Mitchell 82, Brian Taylor 82, Jeff Lossley 84, Scott Bogart 84, Harry Disher 84 B: Heath Palen 78, Trevor Moore 82, Ross Collishaw 83, Dan Denomme, Jeff Kints 86, Peter Hakvoort 88, Don Hodgins 89, C: Scott Barclay 82, Brian Horner 85, Ben Hoogeboom 87, Harrison Eo 87, Ron Holmes 88, Andrew Geiger 89, Doug Geoffrey 90, Jeff Pfaff 90 D: Tim Moore 87, Marc Denomme 88, Paul Paget 88, Darryl Kingma 88, Ron Bilcke 90, Bill Thompson 91, Doug Watson 93 DD: Matt Ische 89, Rob Kobayashi 90, Jeff Kerslake 94, Brian Brooks 98, Brent Gotts 99, Mark Sutherland 99, Wayne Truemner 101 Ironwood Senior Men's Club Sept. 20 - 1st place: Ernie Ahrens 87, Geo Tryon 82, Mike Barclay 92, Len Veri 91, total 352; 2nd place: Lee Richards 73, Tom McLaughlin 86, Al Taylor 89, Bob Forrest 105, total 353; 3rd place: Jim Russell 85, Gary Croucher 87, Jim Tomlinson 90, Paul Hodgins 92, total 354; 4th place: Frank Dumont 80, Jim Campbell 88, Gerry MacLean 97, Casey Zeehuisen 93, total 358; 5th place: Joe Wilson 80, Doug Pearson 91, Ed Prezcator 88, Bill Gilfillan 103, total 362; 6th place: Ron Chanyi 92, Jim O'Toole 92, Mike Ward 87, Brian Wedlake 96, total 367; 7th place (tie): Bill Farquhar 78, Jim Pfaff 88, Jim Morrissey 103, Bob Clark 103, total 372; 7th place (tie): Scott Burton 77, Al Beattie 88, Craig Webber 94, Ken Hermann 113, total 372; 9th place (tie): Murray Morrison 90, Ben Hoogenboom 86, Bill Soldan 95, Casey Cook 105, total 376; 9th place (tie): Terry Bourne 89, Larry Idle 92, Don Gifford 97, Joe Ouwendyk 98, total 376; 11th place: Arn Mathers 89, Don Bedford 98, Ken McConnell 94, Gib Dow 97, total 378; 12th place: Hal Snoddy 86, Brian Munro 99, Jim Hughes 91, Bob Coates 106, total 382; 13th place: Jack Chipchase 88, Don Hord 91, Howard McDonald 97, Guy Giddings 108, total 384; 14th place: Al Preece 89, Bill Thompson 92, Tosh Yamamoto 96, Jack Johnston 109, total 386; 15th place: Don Heywood 93, Dennis Rowe 100, Charly Chambers 91, Bill Haskett 105, total 389 Closest to pin Hole #4 - Jim Campbell, Hole #7 - Larry Idle, Hole #13 - Lee Richards, Hole #15 - George Tryon Ladies Wrapup Club champion Lynne Farquhar AA: LG -Lynne Farquhar 85, LN -Marcia Sweet A: LG -Janet Wedlake 90, LN- Elaine Tomlinson B: LG -Peggy Morrison 99, LN -Marlene Parsons C: LG Marg Prout 113, LN -Mary Burton Ringer Board winners: A - Joan Heywood 31, B -Mary Ann McLaughlin 36, Elaine Tomlinson 36, C-Elsia Hermann 38 Silver Fox award low senior- Sylvia Bedford Most improved: Jan Chittenden Match play champion -Karen Pfaff Miss Congeniality -Elaine Tomlinson 50/50 -Janet Wedlake
