Strong start for junior girls
EXETER - The South
Huron District High School
Panthers junior girls basket-
ball team started their season
off with a bang in a tourna-
ment in Goderich on Sept. 13.
The Panthers began with a
convincing 47-23 win over the
Madill Mustangs.
Using a stifling man -to -man
defense, and a balanced
attack led by Linette Melick
with 12 points, Jaemi Douglas
with nine and Taylor Obre
with seven, the Panthers kept
the Mustangs completely off
balance.
The Panthers then had to
face the St. Anne's Eagles 16
minutes after the Madill
match, as they were sched-
uled in back -to -back games.
After a slow start, the
Panthers took control and fin-
ished with a 35-15 victory.
This time Jaemi Douglas led
all scorers with 11 points
while Taelor Douglas added
nine and Gina Phouttharath
found her game, pouring in
eight points on the fast break.
Their third and final game
against the host GDCI Vikings,
was both exciting and costly.
The game was knotted at 23
with four seconds left when
the Vikings drew a critical
foul and sunk both free
throws, defeating the
Panthers 25-23.
Phouttharath garnered
seven points and Taylor
Mattucci added.
The costly part of the game
was that Melick and Obre
were injured and had to leave
the game early.
Coach Russ Watson was
proud of the team and said
two other coaches comment-
ed on how well they hustled
and fought.
With the memory of their
last -second, two-point loss to
the Goderich Vikings still
fresh in their minds, the team
was looking for payback in
their first league game
against the same Vikings
Sept. 17.
The Panthers played their
tightest man-to-man defense
in full court press mode the
entire game, holding the
Vikings to just eight points in
the first half while they scored
17.
The Panthers added 35
points in the second half
enroute to a 52-25 victory.
Phouttharath led all scorers
with 12 points, most of them
on the fast break.
Chelsea Brintnell turned
great rebounding and several
steals into 11 points while
Taelor Douglas added 10,
many of those also off steals.
Alanna Horn had her best
game yet, garnering eight
points while Jaemi Douglas
had six and Obre and Ashley
McKnight had two. Taylor
Mattucci rounded out the
scoring with one free throw.
This was a great prelude to
the Panthers' own tourna-
ment which they hosted over
the weekend.
The Panthers began with a
convincing 37-17 win over the
Central Huron Redmen
Friday night, then followed it
up with an equally superb
effort against the St. Anne's
Eagles Saturday afternoon.
This gained the Panthers a
birth in the championship
final against the Woodstock
Collegiate Red Devils.
In a shaky start, the
Panthers spotted the Red
Devils a 12-0 lead in the first
quarter, but roared back to
within four points before
falling short 36-42.
Lucan Irish win three straight
LUCAN - The
Lucan Irish posted
three straight wins
last week to improve
their record to 3-1.
Sunday afternoon
the Irish finished the
week with a 4-2 win
in Ayr.
Sept. 24 the Irish
had a pair of goals in
the first from Adam
Hartman and Patrick
Van Boxmeer before
Lambeth tied it in the
second.
Jeff Boyd gave
Lucan a 3-2 lead
early in the third but
Lambeth tied it again
with two minutes left
in the game forcing
an extra period.
Nick Engel won it
for Lucan in over-
time with a goal just
49 seconds into the
overtime for the 4-3
win.
After defeating
Exeter 6-3 Friday
night, Lucan was in
Ayr on Sunday and
took a 2-0 lead on
goals by Jonathan
Cameron and Alex
Regan.
After Ayr tied in
the second, Dustin
McTaggart gave
Lucan the lead again
before the period
was over and he
sealed the win with
his second of the
night 43 seconds into
the final period.
Lucan hosts North
Middlesex tonight
(Wednesday) at 7:45
p.m. and are back in
Exeter Friday at 8:30
p.m.
