The Times Advocate, 2008-10-01, Page 2020 SPORTS Times -Advocate Wednesday, October 1, 2008 Exeter Fury play possible final game Jets ready for season EXETER - The Exeter Fury concluded its 16th season in the Western Ontario Soccer League with a spirited 2-1 loss at home to the Scottish team Wednesday night. Both teams came to play despite it being a meaningless contest in terms of the stand- ings. The Fury started strong by keeping the play in the Scottish end but failing to capitalize on a few great chances early on. Tim Hundey had the best chance from in close when he was robbed by the keeper who slid out to block his drive. The Scottish goalie got lucky a minute later as he was caught out of his net when Hundey loft- ed a shot toward the empty net but the ball landed just wide of the post. As has been the case in recent games the Fury give up one chance and the ball ends up in the back of their net. After failing to clear the ball out of their end a Scottish player was tackled in the box resulting in a successful penalty shot which Fury keeper Shawn Tucker had no chance to save. Later in the half Tucker used his speed and charged out of the box and beat the Scottish player to the loose ball preventing a breakaway and a sure goal. Exeter continued to apply the pressure in the visitor's end of the field but couldn't put the ball past the keeper. Masters call-up and original Fury member Justin O'Rourke came close on a blast from a long distance but the ball just missed the far post. Trevor Boersma was strong all game in the mid -field distribut- ing the ball to his teammates for great opportunities in the offen- sive end. Exeter continued to press in the second half but a turnover in the midfield allowed the visit- ing team to blast a long shot that floated just over Tucker's head for a 2-0 Fury deficit. Later in the half the game began to get chippy with the ref- eree issuing a few cards and a red card to a Scottish player which gave the Fury the advan- tage later in the contest. Fury sweeper Chris Hern start- ed a few good runs up the field in an attempt to get the home squad back in the game. Pete McAllister had his hard drive on a free kick clang off the crossbar and back into play but it wasn't long afterward when he was rewarded on a hard blast from in close. Dylan Fidler cut toward the net from the right side and dished the ball to McAllister, the second leading scorer in Fury history, who fired a rocket to the far corner for his 59th career goal with the team. Exeter wasn't about to quit on the night. Nick Williams used his speed on a two -on -one break to send a ball across the crease to his teammate Fidler but the pass was just a little to hard and Fidler could not catch up to it in front of the empty net. As time was running out Jason McFalls had the last chance for the Fury but his trademark chip shot was deflected wide by the keeper just as it appeared to be dropping under the bar. The loss ended a difficult sea- son for the Fury and dropped their record to 2-13-3 and sec- ond last in the Central Division. The Fury head into the off-sea- son unsure of what the future will hold for the team. With only a handful of players signed on for next year the Fury will need to recruit a lot of players including a goalie if they hope to field a men's team for the 2009 season. "I'd like to thank all the guys who hung in for the whole sea- son. I appreciate the dedication and effort they gave every night despite nagging injuries and games when we played short- handed. We couldn't have sur- vived the year without their commitment," team spokesper- son Jason McFalls commented. "I'd also like to thank Shawn McFalls for managing/coaching the team for the last seven years. The original Fury mem- ber and eleven year veteran is moving to the Masters team next year and his contributions on and off the field will definitely be missed," McFalls continued T.J. Zielman TIMES -ADVOCATE CO-OP STUDENT LUCAN - With the WOAA men's senior hockey season starting soon, the Lucan-Ilderton Jets will see a different kind of team starting off their season. With many young players trying out for the team, general man- ager Rob Andrews says it will be a different kind of team, but the chem- istry should come together as the season goes on. He suspects the team will also be inex- perienced with the pace of the game, but should pick it up with younger and faster skaters in their lineup. Tryouts have been held at the Lucan Community Arena where they have had about 20 players show up regularly for the team. Although there have been changes in the ros- ter, the coaching staff will remain the same. Coach Rick Pikul will be behind the bench again this season along with assistant coaches John Medd and Paul McTaggart. The Jets will also have trainers Glen Silver, Bruce Cornish and Dennis Leblanc for the upcoming season. Last year the Jets were a solid team with a record of 17 wins, eight losses and one shootout loss. In the playoffs how- ever, the team struggled and were eliminated in the first round by the Elora Rocks in four straight games. As the Jets head into their fifth season as a team, they will kick off their season against the Clinton Radars Oct. 17 at 8:30 pm.
