Capsule Comments
by Ernie Miatello
The sense of taste consists of sweet, sour, bitter
and salty. A fifth element was confirmed in 2000. It
is umami that is the taste of protein in meat, cheese
and fish. This taste is linked to monosodium gluta-
mate (MSG) used to give an enhanced meaty flavour
to vegetable dishes and is used in some Chinese cooking.
If you are having abdominal surgery, chewing gum may help
you recover more quickly. Chewing gum for one hour three times a
day can help the bowels return to normal function. Gum chew-
ing increases saliva flow too which also can reduce the feeling of
heartburn.
Traditional Chinese medicine practitioners look at the tongue to
make many diagnoses. Fat tongues could signify low thyroid. Red
beefy tongues might mean pernicious anemia. A bumpy tongue
could be a sign of poor oral hygiene. Fissures on the tongue are
common and don't mean anything serious.
Blood pressure pills work in various ways to keep your blood
pressure down. One works by reducing the sodium in your body.
Another lowers the amount of renin a pressure -raising chemical in
our kidneys. Some drugs will lower pressure by dilating the blood
vessels while others act by slowing the heart and relaxing the blood
vessels. Keeping your blood pressure in check is really important.
Take your pills exactly according to your doctor's prescription.
