The evening saw original founders paid tribute to, while dignitaries made speeches and recognized the history of Community Living. A slideshow gave those in attendance a pic- ture of Community Living through the years. Current exec- utive director Bruce Shaw spoke of the roots of the organization, explaining that, "In the mid -sixties, a group of par- ents and sever- al others met to discuss the formation of some sort of nursery school for children who were developmen- tally delayed. Those working behind the scenes were parents Ivan Sharrow, Nonie Hemingway, Case Van Raay and Walter Fydenchuk. The first board of directors was installed in 1968, including president Ron Heimrich. Community Living - South Huron was the 111th organiza- tion formed in Ontario for assisting parents with develop- mentally challenged children, Shaw said. "Two schools were in opera- tion — one in Grand Bend and the other at McCurdy (Huron Park). A teacher was found, Ella Morlock, who looked after four children. Whatever pay she received, she received it from parents and fundraising activities of the new organiza- tion until 1970 when the Huron County Board of Education took over administration of the school. "It moved a total of seven times in its history before one school was firmly established in 1982 at McCurdy Public School in Huron Park. In 1984, the age-appropriate children moved to South Huron District High School in Exeter to become `students.' Eventually, Community Living moved to Dashwood when Dashwood Industries sold the Lions executive — The installation cere- mony for incoming officers of the Exeter Lions Club was held Sept. 24 at the Exeter Lions Den. Paul Anstett was elected as the club president for year 2008-2009.The club has 43 members and meets on the second Wednesday of each month.
