HOLMESVILLE — With two weeks to go in the fed-
eral election, Huron -Bruce voters heard their local
candidates on stage in Holmesville Friday night, as
Conservative Ben Lobb, Liberal Greg McClinchey,
Glen Smith of the Green Party, NDP candidate Tony
McQuail and Dave Joslin of the Christian Heritage
Party (CHP) took part in an all -candidates meeting
hosted by the Huron County Federation of
Agriculture (HCFA).
Independent candidate Dennis Valenta was unable
to attend due to work commitments.
The meeting was chaired by HCFA president
Stephen Thompson and moderated by members of
the Clinton Toastmasters club, with each candidate
giving an opening two -minute statement with the
order determined by a previous draw.
In his opening remarks, Lobb emphasized the job
the minority Conservative government has done in
the past two and half years with its tax cuts putting
more money in the pockets of Canadians as well as
replacing the Canadian Agricultural Income
Stabilization (CAIS) program.
McClinchey said that too often the rural voice isn't
heard and promised that a Liberal government would
appoint a rural affairs minister which he said would
double the rural voice.
He added that green enterprises must be fostered
and failure to act would spell trouble for Canada.
In his opening comments Joslin said McClinchey
didn't want voters thinking about the Liberal Party
and its leader Stephane Dion, who he said would ban
guns and bring in a carbon tax that would make
Canada less competitive.
Joslin said the CHP would overhaul the tax system
and replace it with a Fair Tax.
McQuail said he wanted to talk to those in atten-
dance about "agricultural cannibalism," and a "get
big or get out system," that hurts farmers.
He added an. NDP government would work to devel-
op sustainable agriculture.
Smith said the Green Party is truly Canada's envi-
ronmental party and it would protect Canada's envi-
ronment by developing new forms of energy and that
it would pull out of Afghanistan by February 2009.
Following the opening comments, the candidates
took questions from the floor that were submitted to
HCFA directors.
In response to a question about how the parties
would stimulate manufacturing, McClinchey said lay-
offs at plants in the area such as Wescast and Volvo
