The Times Advocate, 2008-08-20, Page 14Wednesday, August 20, 2008 Times -Advocate 13 Acting stands out in "Caesar and Cleopatra" By Scott Nixon TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF STRATFORD — Director Des McAnuff's "Caesar and Cleopatra," which opened to an appreciative audience Sunday night at the Stratford Festival, sees a Canadian acting icon return to the Stratford stage. Christopher Plummer, as Julius Caesar, had the audience in the palm of his hands for most of Sunday night's performance of the George Bernard Shaw play. The story, which documents the elderly Caesar's arrival in Egypt where he meets the young Cleopatra, mixes comedy with drama and action, featuring an impressive variety of colourful cos- tumes and sets of ancient Egypt. Plummer is a masterful stage actor and he is in top form as Caesar, alternately tossing off one-lin- ers to outbursts of laugh, then going on an angry rant representative of the mixture of comedy and drama the play is. But it would be selling the play short to only point out Plummer's performance. Nikki M. James is excellent as Cleopatra, and she and Plummer show seamless chemistry as the elder Caesar teaches the 16 -year-old Cleopatra how to be an Hail Caesar — Legendary Canadian actor Christopher Plummer and Nikki M. James, above, play the starring roles in the Stratford Festival's "Caesar and Cleopatra;' which opened Sunday. James, who made her Stratford debut earlier this summer as Juliet in "Romeo and Juliet," shows great command of her lines and holds her own against Plummer. Other standout performances include Diane D'Aquila as Cleopatra's over -bearing nurse Ftatateeta and Peter Donaldson as Caesar's chief officer, Rufio. Paul Dunn plays an entertaining and over -the -top Ptolemy, Cleopatra's wimpy younger brother. McAnuff's direction keeps the action and dia- logue moving along quickly other than a couple of moments during which things tend to drag. "Caesar and Cleopatra" is for the most part fast - paced and represents stage acting of the highest order, not only from its legendary star, but from the supporting cast, too.
