ZURICH — "Everyone
understands the value of
a good night's sleep,"
said Blue Water Rest
Home (BWRH) adminis-
trator Martha Craig July
23, as the rest home rec-
ognized all those who
have donated to the bed
upgrade program in the
last two years.
During a ceremony at
the rest home, a plaque
honouring the major
donors to the campaign
was unveiled as well as a
book listing all 689 names
who donated.
Board chairperson Ron
Heimrich said the cam-
paign was the first major
fundraising campaign
BWRH undertook since
its founding in 1965.
When the project was
put forward in 2005,
Heimrich said while it
was known that it was
ambitious, it was also
recognized as worthy of
the effort and that it
could be done.
Two years after the pro-
ject started, Heimrich
says the goal has been
met with $105,000
raised, enough to provide
every resident in the
home with a modern elec-
tric bed, which have

beds.
Richard Erb, chairper-
son of the community
development fund, said
"to be successful you
must connect with the
community. It has
allowed us to be success-
ful for 43 years."
Craig added the
new beds will make
a difference for resi-
dents who will be
able to control their
own level of com-
fort. She added it
will also be easier
for staff with less
stress and injuries.
REGIONAL WRAP UP
Seaforth water
SEAFORTH — Huron East is trying to get an
extension for OSTAR funding for a Seaforth water
upgrade, says the Huron Expositor.
The municipality was counting on the funding for
two-thirds of the project but Huron East recently
learned the funding could be discontinued by next
March.
The municipality was told at a July 22 meeting
by a business analyst from the federal government
who said federal funding won't be available after
next March although the project won't be up to
provincial standards by that date.
Brussels Coun. David Blaney said municipal staff
are discussing a possible extension of the project.
Centre breaks ground
CLINTON — The official groundbreaking of the
Regional Equine and Agricultural Centre of Huron
(REACH) was held July 23 in Clinton, reports the
Clinton News -Record.
Representatives of several partners of the pro-
ject were on hand, including Huron -Bruce MPP
Carol Mitchell, who said the provincial govern-
ment would invest $500,000 in the centre through
the Rural Economic Development program making
a total of $850,000 provincial funding.

As reported in last week's T -A, a
group from London has issued a
challenge to the winning Hensall
group and a cook -off will be held at
the Purple Hills Country Music Club
in Thorndale Sept. 28. That group
will also make a donation, Ingram
said.
Ingram credited the entire com-
munity for helping make
Saturday's event possible, but par-
ticularly thanked Alvin Sturgeon
and Lea Seaten for their help.
Ingram said he wants to make
the Sausage and Blues Fest an
annual event.

Funding will createcentre of excellence

Fergusson said the boards
combined to make them eligible
for the minimum $75 million
under the old Canada Strategic
Infrastructure Fund, which is
now Building Canada.
It is the first major funding
announcement for HELP, says
Fergusson and will bring sever-
al improvements to the water
plant in Port Blake.
Among the proposed improve-
ments will be increasing the
amount of standby emergency
power at the plant as well as
the construction of a residue
management plant that will
allow filters to be treated on
site.
The most important project
the funding will allow is the
establishment of a water centre
of excellence and research facil-
ity that Fergusson said will
make Huron County the "Silicon
Valley" of water research.
The centre will advance clean
water technology, water purifi-
cation, technician training and
related services and is meant to
complement the Clean Water
Centre in Walkerton.
The benefits of the funding,
said Fergusson, will be a reli-
able source of high quality
drinking water, "which is the oil
of the 21st century."
Fergusson said while the fund-
ing has been committed, the
upgrades have to be approved
on a case by case situation
after their business models have
been submitted.
"It shouldn't take long, they
like the concept and the idea,"
said Fergusson.
The funding came as another
recent announcement was made
to protect Great Lakes water,
with the signing of the Great
Lakes Basin Compact between
Ontario, Quebec and the eight
American states which border
the Great Lakes.
Fergusson said the agreement
will prevent the diversion of
water from the lakes and has
already gone to the United
States Congress for approval
along with the support of
President George Bush.
"It's a big deal," said
Fergusson and added that while
the agreement
won't prevent
bottled water
companies
from taking
water from the
lakes, they will
be licensed and
regulated.

gency power
systems at the
water plant

the capacity to run the entire
plant.
"We're all ready to go," said
Fergusson who added the board
is looking at a three to seven
year timeline for construction.
"We're very pleased," he said.
"It's been a long time coming."
It is the latest upgrade to the
plant, which Fergusson said has
been a real success story and
which in January was the first
water plant in Ontario to be cer-
tified under new standards of
the new Clean Water Act.
The co-operation between the
boards that run the plant has
also been a model of success,
says Fergusson.
"We respect each other's
needs."
