(photos/Pat Bolen) Sararas descendants hold reunion HENSALL — There were two guests of honour Saturday at a reunion at the Hensall fairgrounds for the descendents of Simon Sararas and Elizabeth Bender Family members paid tribute to Greta Reed, nee Sararas, who will be 100 years old on Dec. 2. The other honoured guest was Rosaleen Gross from Kitchener, who is 98 and a cousin of Greta's who is the last surviving member of the Simon Sararas and Elizabeth Bender family. Brothers and sisters were Laura Sararas (Hubbert), Clara Sararas (MacDonald), Edna Sararas (Caldwell), Greta Sararas (Reed), Earl Sararas, Doris Sararas (Bonthron) and Ross Sararas. The event started at 1 p.m. with a meet and greet. Janice Bonthron organized the event and arranged tables for old family pictures to be displayed on and an old tablecloth and rug that Elizabeth Sararas had made. Ian Reed gave a short history of the descendents of Simon Sararas and Janice Bonthron initiated con- versation on old recollections and memories. Greta was born on Dec. 2, 1908 on a farm on the Goshen Line, just south of Zurich. In 1912 the family moved to Hensall where she first went to school. Her father Simon ran a butcher shop and later became a fireman, tending the boilers at one of the mills. In 1915 the family moved to a 50 acre farm just west of Cromarty. Greta walked a mile to a one -room school, S.S. No. 7 Hibbert and the family attended church in Chiselhurst. In 1925 Greta moved to Toronto and lived with her sister Laura. Shortly after that Greta was employed by the Timothy Eaton Company where she met Jack Reed. They were married in 1938 at Niagara Falls. In 1943 their only child Ian was born. They moved from Toronto to Port Credit in 1956 and stayed there until 1990 when they moved into an apartment in Mississauga. Jack passed away in 1999 and Greta came to live in Orangeville at the Avalon Retirement Lodge, close to where Ian was living. Greta gets out for two walks a day and is still active in the Lodge. Rosaleen's mother Levina Bender and Greta's mother Elizabeth Bender were sisters and her father was Noah Sararas, brother of Simon. Rosaleen married Carl Gross and had two children, Bill and David. Century of experience — Descendants of the Sararas family held a reunion on Saturday in Hensall and also celebrated a pair of birthdays. (photo/Pat Bolen) Zurich Fair reaches for the stars this weekend Zurich - It's Zurich Fair time again July 25 - 27. Come out and "Reach For the Stars", visit with friends and view the exhibits. Considering the facts that wherever humans are they need to eat; men have landed and walked on the moon; the present frontier is Mars - what will we eat during the long journey there and back and once we get there? We'll enjoy products from a Martian garden of course. Martian farmers will be needed! Come to the fair to see the livestock shows or participate in the competitions. If you have hors- es, sheep, goats, rabbits, pigeons and various breeds of poultry meet at the sheds on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. behind the Maverick Arena. There will also be an animal display at the Bluewater Arena. Exhibits judged Friday afternoon Homecraft exhibits of baking, sewing, crafts, photos, flowers and vegetable, and the elementary school aged children's exhibits must all be entered between 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Fri., July 25. These exhibits are judged on Friday afternoon and will be on display for viewing from 1 - 9 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There are many special prizes to be won that have been donated by local businesses. Some exhibitors may have prize winning entries for the Ontario associa- tion of Agricultural Societies, District 8 Competitions in 2008, such as the best quilt entered in the fair, a loaf of 60 % whole wheat bread, a plate of chocolate chip cook- ies made by a 10 to 15 year old youth, a poster to adver- tise the fair made by students in Grades 5 to 12. Unique Space presentation Melissa Battler from the University of Western Ontario Space Society will be on hand at the opening of the fair on Fri., July 25 at 7:30 p.m. at the Zurich Complex Hall. You will be amazed by her PowerPoint and videos showing what life could be like on Mars and she's going to tell us about her work to train "pre -astronauts". You could see what it's like to be an astronaut...a lucky par- ticipant will win the chance to wear a real space suit! Throughout the day enjoy food and refreshments at the Zurich Agricultural Society food booth or the Lions Den in the arena. There is no admission to the grounds or the arena on Saturday. On Sun., July 27 a Speed Horse Show at the Maverick grounds will show how riders and horses reach for their stars. A jamboree at 1 p.m. at the Bluewater Complex Community Centre will be followed by a ham supper at 5 p.m. Musicians are invited to provide music for danc- ing or listening in the afternoon. The directors of the Zurich Agricultural Society wish to thank the local businesses for their cash donations, goods or gift certificates which make it possible to hold a fair each year. Fair prize books are available at local businesses or information may be obtained from Zurich Fair secretary Margaret Deichert at 236-4130. The MC for the evening will be Kristylee Varley from radio station 104.9 The Beach. This local star will join Melissa and other area dignitaries to help open the 144th Annual Fair. Kati Durst, Top 10 Canadian Idol finalist from Goderich will be featured at the dance and Elimination Draw to follow the official opening pro- gram. This dance is co-sponsored by the Agricultural Society and the Zurich Lion's Club. It includes door prizes and beef on a bun. On Saturday morning a saddle horse show begins at 9 a.m. at the horse ring at the Maverick Arena grounds. On your way to he Bluewater Complex to take in the various events, stop and view the animals as they and their owners compete for prizes. Parade Saturday at Noon Get your float ready for the Saturday parade that leaves at noon from the Zurich Public School grounds. Owners of antique vehicles and tractors are welcome to participate in the parade. Follow the parade to the Community Complex to take in the exhibits, children's "Spacey" games and activities, petting zoo, Heavy and Halflinger horse show (1:30 p.m.), Baby Show at 2 p.m. (all entrants in the Baby Show from newborn to one year will be given gifts donated by local businesses).
