The Times Advocate, 2008-07-23, Page 11Wednesday, July 23, 2008 Times—Advocate 11 St. Peter's celebrates its 135th anniversary ZURICH — Over 650 past and present mem- bers of St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church in St. Joseph recently gathered to remember all those who came before and celebrate the faith that has bound the church community for 135 years. Families from as far away as Malaysia mar- veled at the fresh face of the recently renovat- ed church, strolling through the landscaped grounds and cemetery, past the statues of St. Joseph, the Virgin Mary and St. Peter to wit- ness 135 years of history. St. Peter's has embraced many new families into the community over the years, but has not forgotten its heritage. The church registry lists most of the family names of the original settlers who founded the `Little French Settlement' in 1873. History was much of this celebration as two comprehensive publications were made avail- able to parishioners. A pamphlet entitled "Celebrating Our Past" chronicles St. Peter's (St. Pierre-aux-Bouleaux) parish histori- cal events from 1846-2008 as com- piled by Larry Langan. Dennis and Lydia Ducharme researched and wrote the "135th Anniversary Celebration," a booklet updating the historic memoirs of the parish from a previous publication in 1929, called "Old Boy's Home Coming." Saturday's evening of entertain- ment featured community favorite Joe Overholt with over 25 local per- formers. i1 J Gaiser "",Kneale Ins. Broker Inc. Jim Hoffman 118 Main Street, Dashwood 519-237-3532 The music recaptured memories of the many dances held in the St. Peter's church hall which is scheduled for renovation next year. Sunday morning the expansive white tent overflowed as 650 people enjoyed the voices of choirs from past and present prior to celebrat- ing the anniversary mass lead by Bishop Ronald Fabbro. Assisting the Bishop were previous parish priests, many of whom grew up in the parish, and current pastor Father Peter Keller. Mark Tucker, parish council member and chairperson of the event with his wife Dianne, stated, "St. Peter's has made quite a trek since being listed for possible closure two years ago. This celebration is actually the culmination of much planning, extensive renovation to the church and grounds that the entire parish and community have contributed to and we are all very proud to be a part of this."
