The Times Advocate, 2008-05-14, Page 19Wednesday, May 14, 2008 SPORTS Times -Advocate 19 Fury open with win EXETER - The Exeter Fury launched their 16th season in the Western Ontario Soccer League by defeating Taxandria 2-1 May 8 in Exeter. The game became a defensive struggle after all three goals were scored in the first 10 minutes of the contest. The Fury had their fastest start to any pre- vious season by scoring a goal three minutes into the match. Corey Firth was sent in on a breakaway but was thwarted by the keeper who slid out on the wet grass and blocked the attempt. The rebound came back up the field to Trevor Boersma who one -timed a ball that arced just under the crossbar for the quick lead for the home team. Before the crowd set- tled into their seats, Firth was at it again one minute later, mak- ing a cross to Nick Williams who was able to head the ball past the stunned keeper to make the score 2-0. At the 10 -minute mark a Taxandria play- er cut toward the Fury net but lost control and slid into Fury keeper Ryan Masse. The referee awarded a penalty shot by call- ing a questionable pushing foul on a Fury defender saying the Taxandria player was shoved into Masse. The visitors made no mistake on the shot to cut the Fury lead in half. Both teams battled hard to create offensive chances from that point on but most of the game was played in the mid -field. Masse made a sliding save just before half- time to preserve the lead. Taxandria began to take the play to the home squad in the sec- ond half but Exeter's defense led by Chris Hern held strong. The visitors fired a number of shots toward the Exeter net but Masse did a good job controlling the rebounds even under the slick conditions after the rain. Late in the game the Fury survived a num- ber of corner kicks in their end including one on the last play of the game to seal the victo- ry. The Fury play their next Third Division Central game in Strathroy May 21 against Middlesex.
