Turning a steel shaft on the lathe to fit a bronze bushing takes a skillful steady hand. Rebuilding a Caterpillar tractor to running condition takes stub- bornness. Just ask Vernon Postill, and he will tell you all about the kind of stubbornness it takes to restore a machine that refuses to move when the engine is dead. Vernon lives near Exeter and he took on the task of restoring a 1936 Caterpillar Model 22, narrow gauge crawler tractor of the 2F series. This machine has a four -cylinder gasoline engine of the Caterpillar compa- ny's own design. The 25-h.p. engine starts by using a hand crank and an impulse magneto produces the hot spark for ignition. The machine was purchased from Sam Sweitzer of Exeter in 1972. It sat for years unused, and during that period of sitting outside, the engine seized up, as did the steering clutches. The transmission and clutch gear case had a bad crack, so a parts machine was located in Michigan and hauled home in the back of a three- quarter ton pickup truck. Parts from both were used to make one good unit. The stuck engine was removed from the chassis and the process of freeing it up started. Penetrating oil was poured into the engine through the spark plug holes. Using a steel bar on the engine clutch, the pistons began to move and broke free. The four burned exhaust valves were replaced by Norm Smith at a trac- TJ's Pool League John Hayter 2658, Chris MacDonald 2221, Terry Haugh 2171, Tyler Scott 2067, Bob Jones 2030, John Burdon 2004, Ken Kadey 1989, Bill Crump 1800, Gary Deichert 1690, Ben Hoogenboom 1653, Derek Tiller 1564, Lee Seymour 1500, Jim Hayter 1450, Stephan McGee 1328, Jim Scott 1193, Phil Turner 1125, Mark Hunt 985, Tom Triebner 897, Jerry Elmquist 712, Matt Muller 534, Jason Tower 390, Jerry Marshall 293, Gus Gregus 201 tor repair shop in Varna. He used valves from a Case LA tractor to make the repair. New piston rings were fitted, along with a new head gasket and the engine was ready to run. The hardest and most costly part to repair was the track and chassis suspension system. The dead axle needed to be turned to fit the new bronze bushings on the track assembly. All this was done after the track chain was removed from the machine. The master pins that hold the chains together came apart without a lot of problems. Once the chain was lying out flat, close inspection revealed that all the chain pins and bushings were suitable for continued use. Another nailbiter of a job was to replace the rim of each track idler. The steel rim was heated and sweat onto the centre of each cast iron idler. With the assembly completed and all parts cleaned, there wasn't much left to finish. The seat and armrests were upholstered and the painting process started. No fancy compressor or air gun painting for this beast of a machine, just a brush and the correct thickness of original Caterpillar yellow paint. It took nearly a gallon of carefully applied paint to transform this rusted machine into a thing of Linda Reaume Design Consultant Bob Smyth Design Consultant West Coast kitchens..
