Bluewater
debates landfill
By Pat Bolen

VARNA — "You're in a difficult spot" said Steven
Janes, a consultant to the Huron County Planning
Department, to Bluewater Council Nov. 26. Janes was
speaking at a meeting to discuss options for future
landfill needs in the municipality and whether it
should look at expanding its landfills
Also at the meeting were Peter Harrison and Frank
Vanderloo from B.M Ross.
James gave an overview of the landfill situation in
Bluewater, including the Hay landfill site which he
said is scheduled to close in April 2010.
James said there is an agreement between South
Huron, Goderich, Huron East and Central Huron that
will see the three municipalities send their garbage to
the South Huron site until 2015 if a Stage Three devel-
opment isn't approved by the Ministry of the
Environment (MOE).
If the extension isn't approved, James said the site
will revert back to South Huron control and the three
municipalities will have to find a new landfill to send
their waste.
Other key dates noted in the report to council were:
• 2017 - combined Bluewater landfill capacity
exhausted based on current approved practices;
• 2022 - date up to which the three municipalities
can use South Huron landfill if Stage three is
approved;
• 2023 - combined Bluewater landfill capacity
exhausted if also granted approval for above -grade
landfilling at the Stanley site.
The report noted Bluewater voted several years ago
not to participate with the other municipalities in join -

South Huron welcomes new doctor to area
By Scott Nixon

EXETER — Sean Ryan is the newest doctor
in town.
Dr. Ryan is working in the Family Practice
Clinic as well as doing emergency depart-
ment work and in-hospital care at South
Huron Hospital. He started Nov. 13.
Ryan, from New Brunswick, graduated
from medical school in Halifax and complet-
ed his residency at Western, along with his
wife, Mili Ryan, who is in residency for psy-
chiatry. They both liked Southwestern
Ontario, so they decided to stay here. Ryan
said the smaller communities in the area
remind him and his wife of New Brunswick
and they like being close to Toronto.
Ryan, who has also done residency work in
Strathroy, lives in London, but said he want-
ed to practice medicine in a smaller place.
Ryan said the family doctor has a bigger role
in small communities and there are fewer
politics and more interesting work.
"It's been great," he said of his first few
weeks in Exeter, adding, "Everyone's been
great to work with." Ryan has been busy
doing a lot of clinic work this month, meet-
ing as many new patients as possible.
Eventually, the plan is for him to work three
and a half days at the clinic, filling the rest of
his time at the hospital.
South Huron Hospital corporate manager
Cheryl Pfaff said having Ryan in Exeter is "a
great benefit" for the community and she
has heard nothing but positive feedback
about him.
Pfaff said there has been an influx of
"orphan" patients with Dr. David Hodder's
retirement. Ryan's arrival has helped fill
that void, although there is still a waiting
list.
She said those looking for an appointment
with Ryan can call the clinic at 235-3343
and leave a message with the appropriate
information. Somebody from the clinic will
return the call within the day.
The Family Practice Clinic on Huron Street
across from South Huron Hospital is open 8
a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday, while the
walk-in clinic is open 4-7 p.m. every day
except Christmas. The clinic lab is open
Monday to Friday from 7:45 to 10:30 a.m.
