THE LOWEST OR ANY TENDER NOT NECESSARILY ACCEPTED Crack and ecstasy problem in Exeter By Nina Van Lieshout TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF EXETER — A drug forum at South Huron District High School (SHDHS) Nov. 14 revealed several startling facts about the Exeter area. Huron OPP Cont. Joanna Van Mierlo and an undercover Huron County drug detective, who does not want to be identi- fied, were the highlighted guest speakers. "Exeter has a bad crack problem, and an ecstasy prob- lem," says the detective. Although there are other drugs in the area, the detective says Exeter in particular is known for its crack and ecstasy problems. The detective also stated that Goderich is bad for powdered cocaine, whereas the Wingham area is battling a meth problem. "There are very, very dan- gerous drugs in the county," the detective added. The detective says the drugs are brought in by gangs from larger cities, and some of the members live in Exeter. During the forum several areas of drug use were explored, from what to look at if you think your child is exper- imenting with drugs, to SHDHS's responsibility and processes around drug and alcohol use. SHDHS principal Jeff Reaburn, who brought several pieces of drug paraphernalia that was confiscated from stu- dents, explained that Visine and small plastic Ziplock bags are usually a good tip off that his students may go and "smoke up at lunch." The detective also added to that, saying that stu- dents who smoke marijuana will most likely have their favourite pipe or bong that they use on them, along with scissors and any other items needed to use drugs. Altoid tins are extremely popular among drug users, according to the detec- tive. The detective says other indictors of drug use could be the type of music being listened to by the students, "4:20 (April 20)" written across binders," which is a well-known day to SHDHS drug forum — Huron County Const. JoannaVan Mierlo, above, and a Huron County drug detective, who requested anomity, were the highlighted guest speakers at a South Huron District High School drug forum Nov. (photo/Nina Van Lieshout) smoke marijuana, the way the students dress (if they begin dressing or acting differently) and at home parents should look around their teenager's room. The detective says chances are if marijuana type posters are hung on the wall, it could indicate some drug use. Reaburn says he knows regardless, "drug deals will happen," but is try- ing to stay vigilant, and hopes the com- munity will also take part. Reaburn cites the Main Street and Gidley Street in Exeter as problematic drug deal areas. Reaburn also says the school is cracking down on non -students not being allowed on the school property and says students caught with drugs or alcohol will be suspended. There is also a counsellor at the school about twice a month who is Although there are other drugs in the area, the detective says Exeter in particular is known for its crack and ecstasy problems. available to speak with the stu- dents regarding drug and alco- hol use. Van Mierlo explained at the session that parents need to stay involved with their child's life. "It's not the police or the school's job to raise your chil- dren." She made a couple of sugges- tions for the parents who attended the forum, but said also "the parent's who should be here are not." Suggestions included educa- tion for the parents by looking up the information on the com- puter, talking to their children (starting small, do not accuse them of anything) and leading by example. Van Mierlo also says if par- ents feel something isn't right, "breach their privacy to ensure their safety," by looking through their room. "It is your responsibility to parent," she says.
